I have a 2014 5.7 hemi 135K miles. Engine light is on and code is p0302 and it's ticking. Ticking is louder on cold start and then fades some when it warms up and when I'm driving. Truck runs smoothly (no mds with engine light on) but it idles a little rough. Mechanic says spark plug and coil are ok but it probably needs new lifters and cam and says thing to do is new engine instead of replacing lifters and cam. Before this happened, truck was running really well. Is it worth it to just replace the lifters/cam or is it better to replace engine? Any thoughts would be appreciated - thanks.

The OEM uses if there is metal in oil control valve to decide. Did you price both? BTW that is how cam starts to fail most the time, your exact symptoms. You should verify if you are thinking about it.

The mechanic I had the truck at gave me a price of $10K to replace the engine but he wouldn’t give me a price to to replace the cam/lifters. He didn’t open the engine to inspect - he just went off the tick and the fact that the plug and coil was ok. I’m trying to get an estimate for the cam/lifters from someone else. Where I live there are a lot of RAM dealers (where I don’t want to take it because I’m assuming that’s going be really expensive) and most of the mechanic shops are small and they just want to do quicker repairs.

your not to far from me I will dm you i do camshaft jobs all of the time just finished one on a 2011 10k for a new engine is hilareous. If the engine was maintained doing the cam is no big deal ballpart for new cam/lifters 2000-2500 many ways to do this job just depends what route you go.

That is almost certainly your exhaust manifold bolts. They are notorious for either backing out or breaking off. 9.5 times out of 10 on the drivers side. Just two weeks ago, I had a reputable shop remove them all on the drivers side and put a new gasket and all new bolts in with “upgraded” bolts. No more tick!
Two were broken off and had to be drilled and an ease out used. There was also a rattle in the heat shield on that side due to the broken bolts.
It was about $600, unless you want to attempt it yourself which I would not recommend.

Does the 5.7 sound right? It's on a 2014 with 160k on it. I asked for a video and the guy sends these, sounds suspect to me but I'm unsure. Thanks for any help you may have.

Ok. So last Sunday I started the truck. No engine light. No tick - quiet - running great. For 3 days it was like that and I drove it locally and on a highway - no issues. I took it to a dealer only to have them hopefully look at it to see if the cam/lifters needed to be replaced. When I took it to them no engine light and no tick. They basically didn’t look at it - they swapped the coil and a spark plug - and, of course, when they gave it back to me the engine light was back on and the tick is back and they tell me based on the tick it’s the cam/lifters but they won’t give me an estimate for the cam/lifters, they would only give me an estimate for a new engine … $13K. Is there any significance to the fact that for the 3 days I had no issues and then they came back or is it just safe to say I need to replace the lifters/cam?
