My 92 d150 has the a518 4spd and 318 magnum with 210000 miles. Trans went out under heavy towing and I found a 95 1500 with 318 and 46rh transmission and only 57000 miles. I took both trucks to local mechanic to swap the transmissions after reading extensive forum discussions saying that the 46rh was just a nomenclature change and it is identical to the a518. The mechanic said the 46rh has a different neutral safety switch hookup and therefore not compatible as a whole unit but the guts of the transmissions are the same and can be swapped that way. First, is this accurate? And, if so, are there other ways of getting around this issue without swapping just the internals? And, furthermore I really wanted to swap the entire engine and transmission assembly together from the 95 into the 92 and basically reset the major power train to 57000 miles. What all would be involved in this full swap as far as electronics, etc...? The 95 has digital odometer where the 92 is analog rolling numbers. I can update with pictures and vin information if needed. Thanks for your time.

I'm not sure what your mechanic is referring to here with the A-518 and the 46RH because they are one in the same transmissions from 1992 to 1995. The only difference is some of the early
A-518's were of the non-lockup torque converter variety and you can identify this version by the use of a 2-pin connector on the trans. The 3-pin A-518's are of the TCC variety.

Your 1995 A-518 should have a 3-pin connector for the TCC/OD solenoid.

If you can post a pic of the trans with a view of the driver side I can tell you which unit you have.

If you are swapping in a 5.2/318ci Magnum motor and trans from a 1995 model then you can use the stock PCM and electronics that you currently have in the truck because the 1992-1995 used the SBEC PCM which stands for Single Board Engine Controller and it has one large, single connector.

FWIW, the 92 speedo/odo is also driven by electric pulse signal.
