Hello all,

2002 Ram 1500 4.7L, 206k miles.

Anyone have problems with oil pressure switch?

Truck has pressure gauge in dash. Original switch leaked, replaced with BWD brand. First one bad out of box, 2nd one lasted 4-5 mo. also developed leak.

Replaced with another brand. And this one, the gauge will go intermittent. Pressure drops to 0, check gauges lamp illuminates. Sometimes 10 minutes or more.

Verified oil pressure with mechanical gauge, reads ok. No tick, tap, or knock when gauge fails to register either.

Connector lock is broken and plugs in with little resistance. I have a new connector, but have not installed it as of yet.

Anyone else have similar issues? Will replace with OE sensor if need be.

Thanks in advance.

Every vehicle made wants to have factory OEM sensors .others may work, but not always properly. only use OEM sensors to try and avoid further problems. When mine went haywire I installed a tee fitting then added a mechanical gauge for assurance of true oil pressure.

I second this. My dad bought his 02 4.7 brand new and they had an issue with the oil pressure sending units going bad very quickly. Replace with a fresh one from dodge and nothing happened since.

As a dealership tech for over 20 years I have seen this issue over and over. There is one weird thing you can try to make it stop. If you look at the oil pressure switch connector you will see two wire terminal holes but only one wire. In the side without a wire is normally a plastic pin to fill the hole. Remove the plastic pin with a small screwdriver and reconnect the connector and start the engine. I bet it has normal oil pressure after removing the plastic pin. I have done it to every motor from the 2.0 up to the 8.3. Give it a shot.

I will take a closer look at the wire, but I believe there are two wires on the connector side.

Nothing would surprise me though.

I have seen instances with electronics where a generic part will work, but not long, as the OE part is bastardized just a bit.

After looking at the wiring diagram your truck only has one wire in the oil pressure sensor connector like most others. Remove the plastic pin from the other slot and reconnect.

I posted this in another thread but I bought My 2002 4.7 new, it has 299,700 miles on it and it's doing the same thing. Pressure was fine (stayed in the middle of the "gauge") up until a year or so ago then it would drop to zero and go right back to normal. It might do this once, or it might do it several times at once, or it might not do it at all, it was never something constant. This made me think electrical/sensor issue. But here recently, it started dropping to zero when the engine got below 1,000 RPM's and would go back up once the RPM's went above 1,000. This last time it did it, I was about 10 miles from home and pulled up to a stop light, the gauge went to zero as expected, but when I got above 1,000 it stayed at zero and stayed there for almost a minute. So I turned around and headed back toward the House, thinking I'd rather be closer to home rather than farther away when it cratered. I made it home and parked it but I'm gonna get a new sending unit along with a mechanical gauge because the Factory "Gauge" is just slightly better than the "Idiot Lights" that Auto Manufacturers used to put in vehicles when I 1st started driving back in the early '70's.
