2004 1500 Trailer brake controller

Hey guys, I am an enthusiast for all of about 36 hours now.
I suppose I have the tow package and the 7 way trailer plug but I think I need an electric brake controller.

I understand there is supposed to be a four way plug for this up by the parking brake. (I've not looked yet)

Do I need to find a 2004 Dodge RAM trailer brake controller or are they pretty universal in tying into our trucks?

They are not universal. Design and plug type changed multiple times over the years. Pretty sure the plug itself was the same from 95-09.

I have an 06 2500, I installed a Tekonsha (Spelling) brake controller with the correct cable from one of the online trailer places. The connector color on my truck is light blue and it is behind the emergency brake pedal near the firewall. This was basically a plug and play operation. Right connector on both ends no fuss no muss.
