Hey everyone. 1st post here. I recently got a used 5.7 out of a 2013 1500 to put in my 2011 1500. I had a shop put it in because it's cold and rainy where I am and I don't have a garage or driveway. The problem is that it is giving multiple misfire codes. I saw it running before it was pulled and was fine. I know they swapped my crank sensor over but I think that is it. I'm really not wanting to dig into the motor and was hoping some of you might have some wisdom to pass on before I do.

Thanks.

The reason you are experiencing multiple cylinder misfires is because the 2013+ motors utilize a different tone wheel on the crankshaft. You will have to pull the engine out of the truck, remove the crankshaft on the 2013 motor and install the 2011 crankshaft tone wheel so this thing will run correctly.

This exact issue has been covered in many different threads on damn near every RAM forum on the interwebs. Sorry you are having this issue. Its not a quick fix by any means and if you are not performing the work it will get very pricey very fast.

Now, the shop that you are paying to perform the installation should have done their due dilligence and research and figured out that the 2013 would not be compatible without some minor surgery while the engine was out of the truck. It would have been much easier to do before it was installed and a heck of alot faster.

So there is no way to reprogram the ECU or swap it out with the 2013 to make it work? Sorry, just trying to see what my options might be.

Find another engine and or pull the engine remove the crank take the tone ring off replace it with the one from your old engine I have done this its a pain in the rear but doable.

There aren't any options to flash update the PCM with different software to recognize the different tone wheel. No luck there.

This engine has to come out and have the tone ring changed or go back to at least a 2012 motor. If this were me and my truck i would buy the correct tone ring for the crankshaft instead of diassembling the old motor. You could even do it with the motor in the truck if you really, really wanted to. Unhook the trans and torque converter and slide it back and remove the rear main seal retainer. Pull the timing cover and the timing setup. Remove the oil pan, connecting rod caps and the main caps and drop the crank from the bottom. It is easier though if you just pull the motor and put it on the engine stand.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to swap the old motor back in as it still runs, just uses a lot of oil, then take my time going through the new motor doing a total refresh before putting it back in. Pain in the butt, but at least I'll know it will be good.

Good idea. Get the old motor back up and running and freshen up the 2013 and install the correct crankshaft tone ring.
