Hello.
I’ve been test driving a few variations of the 2014 Ram 1500. Really like the truck. Working out a deal on a 4x4 crew SXT with the Pentastar and 8 speed. Just curious if anyone who drives them on a regular basis notices a differential “slap” under decel? I drove it a few times and noticed when braking either the transmission catching the lower grear has a distinct “slap” or it might be something in the diff?

I currently drive a C300 Mercedes AWD which actually has almost same transmission (7 speed) and I don’t get the slap.

Thank you,

I found this info posted by a user on another forum. Sounds like might be the harsh shift issue:

I suspect you may be noticing a harsh 4-3 coastdown shift. Many people mistake it for a 2-1 downshift, since it happens at low speed.

The actual closed-throttle downshift sequence depends on what gear you start from. From 6th gear, you get 6-5-3-1. From 5th, you get 5-3-1. From 4th, 4-3-1. From 3rd, 3-1. And from 2nd, 2-1. So the only time you get a 4-3 is if you're in 4th gear when you start the decel. That's why it seems to be intermittent.

Try stopping from each of the various gears. Use the ERS buttons on the shift lever to see which gear you're starting from (when you tap the [-] button the first time from Drive, it will display the current gear). You can tap it down a gear or two manually (using the [-] button) to get into the "right" gear before starting the coastdown. See if you only get the harsh shift when slowing down from 4th gear.

If so, then your 4CAlt CVI has probably learned to a wrong value. Easiest way to fix it is to ask your dealer to do a "quicklearn" procedure on your trans. They do this with a scan tool; it takes less than a minute once the scan tool is hooked up. This resets all the shift adaptives to "factory" settings, and re-learns all the clutch volumes (CVIs). This will often correct a number of harsh shift complaints.
