I appreciate all the help or advice I can get in dealing with this frustrating situation. I will start by saying I have noticed for the last 20,000 miles or so that my truck does sort of vibrate around 60 mph and always assumed it was the aggressive tires I had on it. Just the other day I was driving through town, let off the gas as I approached a stop light and felt/heard a clunk. It seemed weird, continued on my way - the next hour I had no issue. Then, while on the highway it did it again and when I went to accelerate when I hit 20-25mph and tried to climb above it almost seemed like I was in neutral as I would push down and it would just rev. It climbed VERY slowly but I got mostly slipping and revving and very little climbing. I limped it to a shop - they ran the code and it was a P0733 which is for 3rd gear ratio. I went to limp it home after that and went past a dealer that did all my prior warranty work so I stopped in. They ran the code and got a P0733 but also got a Pending code for Solenoid. I should say while limping it to the 2nd dealer it actually did lock me into limp mode. They cleared the codes, drove it a mile or so, came back and ran the codes and it was just the P0733. My fluids looked and smelled good upon testing. I drive a 2015 Ram with the 5.7 Hemi and 6 Speed Tranny. I have about 72.000 miles on it. I am very confused and torn on what it is or could be - they quoted a transmission replacement to be $4500 or solenoid work was quoted as being 800-900. Any additional advice or help? Has anyone experienced this? I just dont know if I should gamble at 800-900 on it being Solenoid and then have to switch the tranny at 4500. Just my luck my warranty expired in JANUARY!!!

Learn about your rfe, watch both of those video's, it is a great transmision with upgrades installed. You could just bump a thread, but maybe the reason nobody replied in the first thread was because you didnt say you had the 6 speed, most 2015's have the 8 speed. That is good news as far as being serviceable.

You have a clunk, and you wonder about upgrade valve body versus transmission replacement. I can't make that decision for you, but one thing is for sure, if you watch those video's you will know what to upgrade if you opt for a transmission rebuild. If it was me, I'd dyi valve body upgrade with the valve body gasket instead of plate, save 400 bucks right there, and put on a new solenoid. If you can drop a pan, you can do all this fairly easy with a torques bit. Best practice, find a way to keep the balls where they belong when you rebuild it. Easy to do unless they got gunked up somehow.

I'd go redline c+ as a replacement fluid, it is completely compatible with oem, my transmission is 8 quarts redline c+ and 4 oem, and I did a pan flush a while back. With a gasket maybe look into sonnax line boost, a lot of guys run that, a cheaper easier way then tuning up psi with the upgrade valve body. More psi, more oil in transmission protecting it in future.

If all of this works, you will want to change that fluid more often, so maybe get a pan with a bolt, or get something to suck fluid out of pan, much less will be changed but you can keep fresh fluid going in. So bottom line, choose a valve body kit, trans go type kit, and solenoid. Or let the transmission shop do their thing. But 4500 for a new transmission that doesn't address the weaknesses of the rfe, you will just be right back here in another 72k miles, bad move there. watch those vids... they are for 68, but the 65 rfe will be very similar.

Something like this is 300 bucks, then you need a solenoid, maybe another 300, research a gm solenoid upgrade like the video says. This goes way beyond a transmission shop dropping a pan and swapping a solenoid, with 72k miles, you need that kit or similar, many kits out there. At a minimum look at refurbished valve bodies on ebay, maybe with solenoid attached, then if you dyi way more for that 900 bucks as you get an entire new VB, likely vacuum tested for 66rfe.

Thanks for the reply. I heard just a few clunks at different times when I let off the gas (almost sounded like U Joint sort of noise) and then after that last clunk it revs like it was slipped into neutral when I get to about 25 mph - is there a chance that is just solenoid related? Or do you think it for surely will need a valve body as well?

You got to watch the valve body video man, considering the built in cost to drop a pan and how easy VB are to upgrade and how bad they are from the factory, whether or not it is just a solenoid, unless you are really suffering (and most of us have been there) then you really should look at getting the upgrades done or at a minimum new VB. The main reason is how many miles are on your VB plus you having issues. Who am I to argue with your engines code, it says solenoid there ya go. Just say'n anyone with an rfe should watch that ats VB video. again, many kits out there not ats, just find one that makes sense, gl. Research the kits, research upgraded VB, they are plug and play and well under a grand, they will protect that transmision much better.

Thank Burla....I sent you a private message - good call ...when they dropped the pan today - they found bits and pieces of the valve body that had broken off and fell into the pan! So good call on it being a worthless valve body! They are looking to order a VB with Solenoid.....

Lol what? My RAM has had the (4th, these trucks don’t use 2nd prime in normal operation) slip for a long time but it hasn’t sent any codes. It doesn’t change at all, i can manually drop it into 3rd or 2nd and it doesn’t do it. Did it actually bring up a check engine light or was it a stored code?

Mines a 2013 with the same tranny.

I don’t think your transmission is bad, they’re just trying to rake you over. Try with the new solenoid pack, then if that doesn’t work, vb, and let us know. I’m more than interested in this as my truck does the EXACT same thing.
