Hello everyone

I have a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi with a new high pitched tick noise.

I’ve searched the site and seen a lot Hemi tick discussions but not what I think I’m experiencing. I recently did a coolant flush on the Ram and I’m wondering what tick noise Ive noticed while doing the flush.

When starting the engine cold or warm it takes 40 to 60 seconds to start. It’s a higher pitched tick coming from the passenger side, higher front of engine seems to be at valve cover level.

I used a stethoscope and listen to all parts of the engine, block, heads, intake, even at the thermostat, and there is NO internal tick which I was super relieved about. I've never had an injector tick louder than the rest or one sided line this and I don’t know why it would start a minute in. I removed the top plastic engine cover to gain access and will put the stethoscope on each passenger side injector tomorrow if they could make such a tick / clicking noise.

I almost thought it had to do with the water pump and the coolant flush I was doing but I don’t know water pump could make that noise and it remains after the air was purged.

I have replaced the passenger side exhaust manifold bolts 12k miles ago and all are still intact.

The tick’s rhythm remains the same at idle and through RPM increases. I only hear the sound when hood is open. I've owned the truck since new. 80k miles, always kept up with oil changes, No engine codes.

After I tested with the stethoscope, I dumped a bottle of Red Line complete fuel system treatment on an empty tank and fill with premium fuel.

If you guys have any ideas or have dealt with an injector noises which I hoping this is, please let me know your thoughts.

If it is a bad injector, do you suggest replacing all of them or just the one you suspect is causing the noice? Use a Factory injector replacement or any aftermarket like Bosch better?

I have uploaded a Video of the tick / clicking to YouTube but I’m not sure I’m allows to post the link here? It does help explain the sound and location better than typing.

Thanks in advance

Update,
I inspected coil packs and #2,#4 plugs slightly brown but otherwise they look good. I put the stethoscope to each injector and the ticking noise definitely matches the rhythm of the injectors, #2 has a slightly more tinging sound than the other three on the passenger side. I’m wondering if I have a clogged or slightly bad injector (no codes), but the passenger bank is definitely louder than the driver side injectors. No tick from under the valve cover, am I right suspecting an injector?

It sure could be an injector. You recently added the RedLine si1 which is a really good additive, give it a chance to work. Aside from the listening work diagnosis you’ve done so far have you listened to the serpentine belt tensioner assembly, idler pulley and the pulleys driven by the system? Could also be a bearing in one of those components going bad. Easiest to remove the serpentine belt, start the engine and see if the noise is still there.

Thanks I can try the belt tensioner and probably replace the belt, it’s never had a new belt or plugs so I can do those in the meantime.

I can upload the noise from a YouTube link if it’s allowed on the forum I don’t want to get Marked as Spam.

that defini

That’s great, saves $180 per injector from the dealership.

That’s what strange to me no internal tapping or ticking noise with the statoscope the rhythm doesn’t change with an RPM increase, and it starts a minute after the vehicle started.

I’m changing the spark plugs, cleaning the injectors and will check the belt pulleys.

I’m not sure the pulleys could create the noise, but the rhythm does match the injector pulses

Update,
Replaced the plugs, flushed the injectors, and the noise seems to be gone at idle in the garage. I’ll give a longer test tomorrow.
I did find a couple spark plugs with the porcelain and missing at the tips.
