Hi everyone. Thank you for the advice.

We have replaced the battery (no doubt a good idea anyway), but this changes nothing in the results. A clarification I should have included above: it is not possible to start the truck normally at all. All four letters of the shifter show on startup and are also on above the dial. We can't get it out of that state.
Might be locked up due to the low and slow battery drain. Unhook the battery, leave it for about 20 minutes and then hold the two cables together to drain the capacitors in the modules then hook them back up. Besides that, a friend who has a great scan tool that can reset the modules manually.

Once you eliminate the battery and connections as a source, I'd start on the recommended animal chewing wires scenario.
