Just got an estimate for a water pump replacement which includes replacing all hoses and belts from a dealer. Its basically 1600 for parts and 1600 for labor. 800 for labor for belts. 3200 seems insane. The hoses and fittings need to be replaced as i live near the coast, but the belts? Could use some help. Thanks

They are charging 3 hr 15 min for the water pump (assuming that $199 is a standard hourly rate) which is fine, but to do that change they are charging an hour to remove rad hoses, which really takes like 5 minutes. Same with the belt and pulleys. Coolant flush shouldn't take that long either. Point is, they are charging an hour for all of these things that are already part of the water pump process. There's no reason that whole job should take 7 hrs for a pro.

And of course the dealers rake you over the coals when it comes to replacement part costs, so there's like $5-600 in parts that I wouldn't even be replacing if I did it myself.

What issues are you having? What actually needs replaced? I would by an OEM water pump myself and do it in my garage in an afternoon, $3200 is insulting.

The water pump just died. Ironically I was about a mile from the dealer so i managed to make it there. The belts seemed fine (i replaced the serpentine belt about 20k ago). It was whirring a bit when i would start it in the few weeks prior to the pump going out, but the belts visually looked fine.

Replacement thermostats are such a roll of the dice anymore, I would ONLY replace the pump. That and a few hours of labor, dealer price should be sub $1k. If you find an independent shop you might be able to find even cheaper. No way on $3200.

Dealerships used to operate from a Book which gave the time for a task and the charge. I always felt it was slanted toward the apprentice mechanic. It is only recently that I went back to a dealership because it was convenient and minor, still expensive. I am fortunate have a couple of independent shops that I can trust.

I had a pump go out on my 2016, (back in September of 21) of course it was Friday afternoon, I was 600 miles from home, anyway, had it towed to the dealer in Noblesville Indiana, Kahlo, I received a call about 10 am on Saturday all done, it was about $980.00, water pump & coolant only. I agree with the others, radiator hoses, heater hoses and flush should not take more than an hour IF that.

You can do it all yourself way cheaper, even if you take the whole day to do it. I spent $150 for water pump and it came with thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses were $25 ea, antifreeze $18 ea, I did run Dayco belt $54, and bought another belt (Driveworks) for $22 for under back seat spare, IF you've ever broke one on road, you know), at Advanced Auto Parts (normally I'd use partsgeek.com) Just remember the Fan is Lefthand threads, nothing hard about the job really.

so they are miling this job to all ends...an hour for a serp belt is ok, but not when replacing the water pump, and the belt is already off. Same for billing an hour for a coolant flush, when they have every hose off. Some dealerships (Lithia branded around me) service writers work on commission. Sounds like somebody wants you to buy them a vacation

The price on a coolant flush...by itself... is reasonable. The thing that sticks out to me is that they are charging for duplicate time not required, like installing the serpentine belt. They will already have it off when replacing the water pump. Also, they are charging whole hours for things that won't require a full hour to address assuming no complications.
