Anyone here experience a loud whine from oil pan area on cold starts? The noise is most noticeable at startup and 1500 rpm’s and goes away after driving for 10-20 minutes. I’ve been chasing this for awhile - had the etorque replaced (brand new) by dealer under 80k warranty, new pulleys/tensioner on the drive belt side, new drive belt, no sound on anything else, like ac compressor, water pump. Drain and fill on transmission, no noticeable signs of metal at all. Changes diffs and transfer case oil. I was hoping one of these would resolve the sound but no luck. I’ve traced it back to the oil pan area and I’m starting to suspect the oil pump, but oil pressure stays above 30 psi and never goes above 60. One thing I noticed the other day is I can feel a random jolt while driving those first 10-20 min and the oil pressure jumps for a few seconds and comes back down. After it’s warmed up the pressure stays constant and no more jolt - it only happens once. Is this normal for these engines to whine like this? Maybe I need to use a different oil..I’ve tried both 0w-20 and 5w-30, no change? TIA!

One more thing to note - oil pressure increases when getting on interstate but comes back down to 32 psi. I feel like oil pressure at 70mph should be higher than 32..?

Yeah I’m suspecting oil pump but no codes are being thrown.

Yeah I’m suspecting oil pump but no codes are being thrown.

The test instrument to solve this mystery is a mechanic's stethoscope.

For the investment of $8.50, you can own the best device for narrowing down the location for almost any failing bearing sets and it should last your lifetime.

Use with caution around moving parts or a running engine, but most every mechanic owns one of these.

You can substitute a stethoscope with a large screwdriver/rod or wood dowel, but they can be problematic for navigation to parts and keeping your head clear of the moving fan belt.

@RamDiver - already have one but this noise is internal and most noticeable when driving so that doesn’t really help…the most noise I get with someone revving to 1500 is the oil pan but the source could be above the oil pump. I’ve listened to all areas by oil pan, transmission, timing cover, camshafts…only oil pan makes the most noise
