I had the 24" magnaflow and the Y pipe installed today and the drone is real bad. Mainly between 1500-2000 RPM to where it is hard to hear the radio at my normal volume or my daughter in the back seat if she doesn't talk louder than normal.

I haven't heard of anyone else having bad drone with the 24", so could something have been installed wrong? I had the guy reroute the pipes to get rid of the flat part under the transmission pan and rerouted it a couple feet further back and placed the y a couple feet further back. Could this be my problem?

Could I add a resonator before the muffler to get rid of the drone?

Sorry to hear this :( never heard anyone mention drone with 24'' Maggy. There was some drone with the 18" I had on my '09 but nothing that kept me from hearing the kids in the back seat. Plus, I always heard that adding the y pipe mellowed the sound. Must be something with the way they installed it.

I have really bad drone as well between the same rpm as Op. i have a 18" woth y pipe.Especially when I have the air conditioner on I hear it more. Last night I got to Laughlin and as I was unloading my truck I was standing in the bed of my truck and I could hear it really bad. Almost sounds like it wasn't installed right. I gotta have my buddy take a look at it since he installed it.

I'm gonna speculate that rerouting the piping brought it closer to the cabin floor where there probably isn't enough noise deadening material to have the pipes mounted that close.

I have the 24 also and I only drive with MDS on when I'm on the hiway. Its sounds like crap in town if MDS is on. The only drone I get is when I'm pulling my trailer. I put a ton of dynamat in the back and floors because my daughter hated the noise and it seemed to help because she has not complained since.

I have little to no drone when the mds is on. I have also noticed that the mds doesn't kick on as much as it did before, or at least it seems that way. I have driven about 300 miles since the install and I went from loving this truck (bought it a month ago), to being really annoyed.

I guess I could look into installing some sound deadening material, but that seems like it would be much more expensive and labor intensive than trying to quiet it underneath by installing an additional resonator.

I have seen lots of people asking the question of installing an additional resonator to quiet the drone, but few responses that say it would help and it seems like no first hand experience of anyone that has tried it.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

junior81 - let me know if you figure a solution out with yours and I will do the same.

Casper - I looked close today and it doesn't appear anything was routed closer to the underside of the floorboard, just a different direction. In order to run it further back away from the transmission pan he had to go over a cross member, but it's still about 4" away from the floorboard. I did see that where it crosses over and goes back to the passenger side to go into the Y it runs along the edge of the factory sound deadening material on the underside of the truck. Maybe that could be it. If that was the case, wouldn't it be loud at all RPM ranges? It is good under 1500 rpm and above 2000 rpm. Even at WOT it is not that much louder than the stock and sounds good to me.

Minor Update:

Started the truck tonight and crawled under to look around and see if I heard anything. While under there I saw water coming out of several of the welds which led me to look closer at the welds, (I already thought they looked like poor quality but I am picky). I found at least 4 spots in the welds he did where there are holes/leaks. I also noticed that at the back of the muffler something didn't look right. I bought a 3" in dual 2.5" out muffler. It looks like my out should have been dual 2.25" because the stock pipes look funny going our from the muffler. It looks like he just set them down and then there is a bunch of weld on the top side to fill in the gap. Is this normal? I didn't see any 24" magnaflow mufflers on Moes Performance that have 3" in and 2.25" dual out. I know I am rambling, just hoping someone can help me out before I call they guy tomorrow morning and look dumb explaining this stuff if it is normal.

Could the exhaust drone be caused by either of the issues above?

I've also got the 24, and noticed the same thing you did. It bothered me too. But after around 800 mi, it seemed like the low end drone got better, doesnt seem as loud/bad. I dont know if its the muffler breaking in or if I just got used to the sound. I like it now, sounds throaty low and gets quiet cruising. Except for the mds of course, that always sounds like $*it in city driving, especially when it kicks in too soon. So I drive in manual or tow mode on my commute to keep me sane. The MDS doesnt bother me on the hwy, but the roads here are pretty flat. It'd probly be a different story with allot of up&down.

I had a Dakota before I got my Ram. I put a Gibson exhaust and had a bad drone, so I changed to Magnaflow and still had the drone. I dynomated the whole interior and it helped but the drone was still annoying, so I finally went back to a stock muffler. I am so afraid of that happening with my Ram that I am not changing the muffler.

I have the 24" magnaflow and haven't noticed any drone but my y pipe is still stock maybe that's it. Has anyone tried the drone eliminater pipe on moe's website?

It sounds like the quality control on his install was poor, however a few minute leaks will not cause drone.

The placement of the Y pipe (in addition to the style of Y) can change the tone of exhaust for sure, in addition to the 'drone'.

I have a bit of drone with my 18" maggy, but everything else is stock.

Do your tips still extend beyond the bumper cut-outs?

Yes, the tips still go out behind the bumper.

I called the shop that did the install and he wasn't real helpful. Said that it is common with performance mufflers and there isn't much I could do about it. I realized then that I just need to take it somehwere else. I called another shop and the guy said he could weld in a glass pack and it might quiet it down.

My buddy told me that if I install a glass pack that it will restrict flow and make the magnaflow muffler pointless. Can anyone confirm this?

You buddy is correct. And, it doesn't sound like you removed your factory resonators by the tips, so I really don't see much benefit.

So what about putting a dynomax bullet muffler in front or a resonator in front of the magnaflow?

Idk if you have ever looked through one of the bullet mufflers but there isn't much to quiet it down or take drone away.

Now I am thinking of trying to install a helmholtz resonator before the muffler based on the calculation instead of the glasspack. I'll talk to the new shop I am taking it to tomorrow and see if he is willing to do it.

I downloaded an app that measures the frequency and I'll take some measurements over the next 24 hours to figure out how long the section of pipe will need to be. I will report back what happens.
