I have a 2016 2500 with 16K miles. Slight whine starting around 55MPH-60. Dealer told me they have to re-build and I'm heading up there now to talk with the technician. I tow a 6,000lb travel trailer and have logged around 4K miles in the tow mode. I used to race back in the day and had a similar whine in my 4:10 8 3/4 rear end but even though it's a heavy duty truck, I don't expect noise from either differential.

I had a ‘14 2500 the had gear whine when accelerating, starting about 20 MPH and continued up to highway speed. I was a fairly loud. They made 2 attempts to rebuild it, then they replaced the rear axle assembly. That eliminated all the noise.

I now have a ‘18 3500 that whines when decelerating from 45 MPH down to 35 MPH. Two dealers say there is nothing wrong with it. I tow heavy and could use a taller gear so I am having an independent dealer change the 4.10 gears to 4.88 gears. They are replacing all the bearings too so maybe the noise will not be there when they are done.

Just to update. I had a rear diff rebuild in my 2017 and it has helped the whine a bit but it is slowly getting as loud as it used to be. I am just going to live with it and chalk it up to being a truck.

I test drove 5 HD series trucks, if you include mine in there that makes 6.. Of the 6, only 2 of them had a quiet rear end.. A 2017 used 3500 with 30K or so on it, and the new one I bought. of the other 2 new ones, one was slightly noticeable with 12 miles on the odometer, and another one was downright loud, as in the salesman had a shocked look on his face loud. I don't know what it is with Ram and their rear diffs, but they either have a manufacturing flaw, or an assembly flaw. there should be no noise in a rear diff. period end of story. I dont know how they can say one that makes noise, is "normal", because what about the quiet ones out there, I suppose all of them have issues then because they dont make noise. you can't have it both ways.
