So just purchased a 2018 6.4 liter. I've noticed when I let off the gas from higher speeds around 70 mph or so, I hear a whine coming from the rear end. It's loud enough to be noticeable. Has anyone else experienced this?

Nope. Never had anything like that on mine.

I would just take it to the dealer. Brand new truck. Let them work it out. Whining gears aren't really a great sign. Hopefully they didn't short you on fluid from the factory. I do feel like if it was really serious you'd hear whining at more times than just on the highway. But your gears are spinning much faster there.

That's what I was thinking. I'll check it out while it's under warranty.

Is this your first HD Truck? I have always noticed that 3/4 & 1 ton trucks have a little more gear noise from the tranny & rear end. If you didn't notice it when you test drove it, I would have the dealer look into it to be on the safe side. My 2016 has a very small amount of whine getting out of the gas around 65mph. I kind of think mine comes from the tranny though.

Yeah, it is my first HD truck. I've talked to a few guys around that have them and they said they are used to hearing some noise from the rear end. I know with the 4:10 gears, it's possible. I just ordered some wheels and tires for it. So I want them to look at it while it's under warranty and they can't try to blame it on my wheels and tires. I know how dealerships get sometimes.

I only seem to notice the noise when I let off the gas too. Should have included that in the first post.

I would get it checked out. This is not normal. My 6.4 with 4:10 gears does not have this issues.

Probably your diff. Many of us Gen 5 Viper guys have had our diffs (me included) replace under warranty for rear end whine. We have Dana 44s. In my case, I had both clunking, and some light whine at speeds over 50. Usually it's when you are on throttle, when you lift, it should lessen. Mine was never real bad, but some howled!

My new diff apparently came low on fluid out of the box, according to my Viper tech. Even the new one whines a little, but not like the old one. Where I'm going with this is, there's normal gear whine from HD diffs, and then there's WHINE! Since it's a new truck, take it back, and take the tech on a ride with you. I bet they order you a new diff.

My 2015 had rear end noise. They had to rebuild rear end with all new parts. Truck was much better after that. Very little noise.

I am in the same boat, but mine seems unique I have whine at 65ish-68ish, greatly diminished by 70. Its definitely from the rear end.. I also have noise in the 51-54 range, and thats definitely centrally located, maybe the tranny? In both instances it makes the noise both accelerating and decelerating, even in neutral.. Im still working with dealer to resolve... but the fact that mine does it in neutral has them baffled.

When my 1500 made noise the rear end needed rebuilding. I was part of the damn pinion not failure issue. The nuts backed off letting the pinion tolerances go out and luckily I paid attention. When they go boom the take out allot of components.

Mine whines under acceleration, light or heavy and is loudest around 40mph or so. Took it in and they couldn’t find anything. Sounds like loud tires and drives me nuts. Worries me because I just had the tranny completely rebuilt on my 2014. Worried if something fails in rear end it’s gonna take out **** to include tranny.

My 2016 I had the 3.73 with no noise at all. Had 4.56 put in this month and have minimal noise. With after market gears they are cut different than OEM to be stronger so a little bit of noise is expected. I agree with other posts take it to the dealer.

Mine does it around 60 mph when I let off of the gas. It only does it on relatively level ground. If I'm running downhill much, it won't do it. I've already asked the dealer to look at it once and they said it was ok. I'll have it in to them within the next few months and I'll tell them to check it again. It's not normal.

The pont here is, how do they tell if its o.k? In my instance, it didn't make the noise when new, I test drove one with 12K miles on it used before I bought my new one, it didn't make the noise either. To simply pull a diff cover and look inside and say, yup thees gears in there doesn't mean its normal.. Mine goes in again in the morning, this is the third time.

Without hearing the actual noise, I would put my money on a loose pinion nut. I would assume that it was not tightened correctly from the factory. Loose pinion nuts will make a noise when decelerating. The more backlash you have, the more noise. Eventually a loose pinion nut will eat away at the teeth of the pinion itself and then destroy the teeth of the ring (sun) gear. The metal debris that is not caught by the magnet, will eventually work its way into the bearings.

Factories use alot of battery powered tools now, including torque wrenches. The problem is, When the batteries start to fail, there is not always a warning sign, they will just simply not have full power, and it can go unnoticed (even with lithium batteries). It has happened to me numerous times, I can tell by the sound of my gun now, which I use all day long. I am not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I think it is rather odd, with the popularity of battery powered tools now, how recently there are alot of recalls with bolts not torqued correctly on all kinds of vehicles.

A good experienced tech will know what it is. As I said, when my Dana 44 in the Viper was whining (and it was very slight) my tech (with 30 years experience) as soon as he heard it, ordered a new diff.

You guys with dealers giving you grief, ask if your tech can go on a ride with you.

I agree with this. I dropped my truck off at night to my dealer explained what concerns I had on night drop envelope. Dealer called me later the next day and said tech took truck for a spin heard the whining noise and parts were on order, full rebuild. They had the truck for about a week I think. Told them to take their time and make it right.

My 2017 rear end whine is loud to the point that at 70mph I have to crank up the radio to hear the music. The noise is most noticeable at trailing throttle and gets a bit quieter when totally on or off the gas. My mileage is under 6k and I have an appointment at my dealership to diagnose what I already know. According to the dealership there are no bulletins and they have not heard of any other trucks with this issue. Note that this my 3rd HD Ram and the first with this noise.

Well mine has 11K on it now and its still there. Have been to the dealer 6 times all together I think (2 different dealers).. This last time I thought I had em beat.. They were saying tires, so we swapped a new set of tires and rims off another truck and it was still there.. So Im like, O.k well we got them. Then, they said lets drive another truck, and Ill be danged if a BRand new cummins off the lot with 39 miles on it wasn making the same noise at the same spot as mine but even louder. Yesterday I took it to an independent shop and paid 250 bucks to have the rear end examined, backlash checked and pinion. There is no noticeable wear in there, and everything turns freely. I will be PAYING out of my own pocket to have the rear end swapped out after camping season. DOnt want to have to break in a new gear set by immediately pulling a 10K camper. Pathetic.

For the record, I first reported my noise at 1800 miles at the first oil change. Then they had it for a week at 6K miiles and i have had it In I think 4 times between then and now , at 11K miles.

I'm also of the opinion you should have them inspect at least the gear fluid level, test drive it, verify it checks out.

The rear pinions do tend to make more noise in the HD trucks than others. And the highway speed thing does make some sense, when you consider 4.10 gears, that means your driveline is spinning 4.1X faster than your wheels are turning at 60-65.
