So my son currently has a 2021 2500 Ram Cummins that he bought new and now has about 18,000 miles on it. He has an 8100lb TT but may have to upgrade to a larger 5th wheel. He is talking pretty big, like in the 18,000lb GVWR range. He knows he would need to upgrade to a 3500 but he does not want a dually. What would be his limits on a 3500 SRW Cummins 4x4?
He had been using his TT for work but for the last 18 months or so he has been home working local but has been presented a possible opportunity to make about 2-3x what he makes now but would have to go back on the road. If this happens his wife will probably quit her job so her and their son can travel back and forth often and stay with him for weeks at a time thus the need for a bigger TT.
Remember, dually is not an option

By the limits I'm guessing you mean payload capacity? The payload on my 3500 is 4058lbs.

You can plan on 20% of a fifth wheel's GVWR for the pin weight. The GVWR on my fifth wheel is 12,200lbs. I actually weighed my rig at a CAT scale loaded for camping by myself. The pin weight was 2220lbs.

Yeah just wasn't sure a SRW would be enough for an 18,000lb 5er. Figure 3500-ish pounds pin weight he would be close to maxed out with other things taken into account like stuff in the truck itself

My 5th wheel is max 16,900 and runs closer to 25% on the pin. Couldn't do it with a SRW and still sit in the cab while driving without being over. Thus, the DRW. At 18k, maybe it is a triple axle trailer and less on the pin though.

The reason this may happen is there is a company trying to bring him on and they actually pay a hotshot to move the TT from location to location but he also plans to use it for personal use too. He currently has a 26' TT (8100lbs loaded) but his wife and their son will be spending alot of time with him on the road so they would want something bigger with washer and dryer, etc

4500? Kind of overkill? 2500 wouldn't be enough with 3000lbs-4000lbs pin weight. 4500 would be a dually? Dually is out of the question as this would still be a daily driver
