Hello I am new to the forum. I have a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 4x4. Yesterday it began making a sound like a grinding brake pad when I was driving, but it was actually coming from the transfer case. It only does this in 2 wheel drive and once it hits about 40 mph it makes a loud clunk and stops grinding until I slow down below 40 again. In 4 wheel drive it doesn't make the noise but I don't seem to actually have 4 wheel drive. When in 4x4 it will make a whining sound if I hit the gas hard in the snow almost like the 4x4 is not quite catching. And advice would be appreciated. I am working 12-16 hour shifts this week and just don't have time to jack it up and dig in.

May have a broken chain. Drain the fluid and look for metal in it. Only other way to find out is to open up the case.
