1st set of pics (front drum 3rd gear) is normal with a worn front band. Clean it up with scotch brite and as long as it’s not grooved it’s fine.

2nd (rear clutch, drum on input) won’t hurt anything either. I would replace that worn Belleville spring in there though. Also, Make sure the plastic ring between snap ring and bellville spring is not melted due to the heat.

3rd (drum rear band rides)Not uncommon either, although it’s on the poor side of average condition I’d say. Check where that drum rides on the OD support to make sure there is no grooves from lack of lube.

4th (front planet) Clean it up and it will be fine. Just melted clutch material I’d say.

Check all the bushings and washers. I always replace the pump bushing and the bushing in the front drum. The bushing between the sun shell and rear planet usually has some wear and gets replaced as well. Not a terrible idea to do the whole washer kit but not 100% necessary if they aren’t worn.

This is the kit I'm leaning to get http://www.cascadetransmissionparts.com/46rh46rerebuildbundle94-97.aspx
In the picture it does show the wrong filter though so semi sceptical it's the wrong one as it states it shows actual parts. Says it's a rebuild kit for 94-97 46re 46rh could just be the filter though? (Mine doesn't have the plastic around it and has 3 bolts). as for the washers they all looked decent, no gouging or wierd wear marks. Though on one of the planetary gears sets the bushing tabs were in the casting slots and could tell it was impacting either side. To me that seems like it was in the wrong slot but the only other slots were the pins the planetary gears ride on. Will post a pic tomorrow.

Side note- the o/d housing components looked to be in decent shape (frictions, wavy snap ring looks barely touched etc.) Still replacing the frictions and steels but thought was interesting.
Also-Looking harder at the trans it looks as if someone may have rebuilt it semi recently before I bought it. Case itself was almost clean besides the leak from the selector shaft seal and dirt sticking to that. O/D housing is pretty caked in road grime. I'm wondering if the tv cable being disconnected and the previous owner attempting to drive it like that had alot to do with it. Previous owner new very little about it, had only owned it a few months/weeks before working out of state and not having time to look into it.

I have a Fairbanks shift kit for the 46re that came with my rebuild kit, I went with a billet valvebody so I didn’t use it. Still new in the box if anyone is interested for cheap

@mathews8pt the picture that shows the worn belleville spring (direct clutch drum i believe?)- for some reason the clutch pack looks off to me, the inner most one is spaced further from the rest, is this normal? it looks like there is a wider metal spacer and almost looks as if it is missing a friction?

Looks like they may have used a thicker steel in there. Honestly it’s been a while since I did a 46re, but I know all the 47s have 4 clutches in that drum(forward pack). Those are applied in any forward gear and do no actual shifting. That pack is usually setup tighter then the rest. I shoot for .025-.040 and have ran some a little tighter if the truck saw more racing/ pulling then road miles.

Ok, wanted to make sure, please see below the pictures of what I was referring to about the wearing thrust washer, it is in the planetary gear set itself. Thanks! All this help is really appreciated!!20180705_171224.jpg 20180705_171240.jpg

That looks ok, just be sure the tabs on the washer goes in the smaller holes on that planet.

if i do recall correctly, the tabs don't fit into the the small circle holes, the only other one they fit into are the pins the planet gears ride on, would that be where i would put them? might be a dumb question, just don't want to mess anything up from me not knowing.

Might be the wrong size washer then. I’m 99% sure they go in the small holes on that planet. I can check some aluminum planets I have sitting in a junk pile at home tonight.

what would cause that belleville spring to wear like that? is that end play clearance to tight, needing a larger shim?

Over extending the spring because the clutch pack has shrank when the clutches burned up. It was hitting the front planet and wearing

Sorry haven't been able to update, haven't made much progress, back to the thrust washer issue- it is a 3-tab washer to planet gear assembly. In most vidoes/pictures I have been seeing it is a 4 tab here so doesn't help much.20180727_182611.jpg 20180727_182559.jpg 20180727_182546.jpg

Those tabs should all line up in the little drilled holes. Looks like someone used the wrong one

So, i'm getting confused or wondering if something else is off. i got a thrust washer kit that says it comes with the thrust washer below (238) and that seems to be the only 3-tab washer part number (#22238) i can seem to find that fits in 46RE trannys. upload_2018-7-30_9-58-15.png
it is the same size as the original in the pictures above. i do not doubt if somebody may have used the wrong one, but trying to figure out what all is incorrect, that needs to be replaced.
