Does the 4wd completely disengage when your in 2wd? When I turn the front drive shaft it still spins the front left cv axle.

The 4WD completely disengages, yes.
But one stub shaft, the diff and the drive shaft all kinda free wheel around.

The advantage, you don't have to lock your hubs.
The disadvantage, extra wear on everything, and lower MPG.

So if you did lock outs it would benefit the truck

I think the lock outs are worth it just because you get rid of the unit bearings which tend to fail. On my truck (2007 2500 4x4, 5.9 Diesel) we changed them out twice in 100k miles. The problem is the unit bearings have the bearings spaced closer together than in the regular setup. Then when your wheel bearings do need to be replaced, its costs ALLOT less than the unit bearings. On the other hand I don't think you'll see much, if any performance or economy difference with the locking hubs.
