4x4 questions

I don’t know much about the 4x4 in the older trucks, my 79 on the shift lever there’s the low,low lock and hi,hi lock why do they have that many functions? So the truck is full time four wheel drive?

I may be remembering this wrong but with "part time" 4wd,

lo lock is low 4WD
lo is low in 2wd
hi lock is 4wd hi
hi is street speed 2 wd
