So I am in need of advice. 2008 ram 1500 5.7 My cheap buy again. I have (with help) narrowed it down to the valve being bad in exhaust side cylinder 4. A shop took a look to confirm. Plus scoping it looked very bad too. That's my misfire on that cylinder.

Previously ruled out cam and lifter issue, valve motion fine no ticks no lash valve is visible burnt and compression come and goes. A leak down test found it leaking too.

Shop recommended pulling whole motor and having it rebuilt or finding a used motor (none around good), or just doing the heads only at the local machine shop. Shop quoted 300 or less per head for head rebuild (entire head rebuild).

I don't have a garage to leave truck in and it's 10 degrees here and snowing will be snowing for days and days as well as being cold. I can't leave the engine open with the elements so I have to have a shop with space do it. They want 1000 for the removal and reinstall for the set if heads plus the rebuild if I do both plus the gasket kit.

So I am looking at about 1800 or so after tax for this but... Is it worth doing. Engine miles are unknown just doesn't look to be as old as the miles on truck 250k on truck and truck is r titled. It's been hit in front before body is decent except bed is really dented and some small rust over fenders on bed only. Frame and under side good. But it will also need tires and ball joints and breaks to finish her off.

I am looking for an opinion. I have 900 bucks in truck as it sits plus another 100 for the help I have had. Plus the 1800 for the repair that's 2800 and when I put on breaks and some front end parts and tires that's another 1200 at most so I would be in the thing 4k for a 2008 with high miles and an r title. But will pass inspection.

Thoughts?

I think if you got a half way dependable truck for under $5,000 you are probably fine.

If you can make it reliable for a decent amount it saves you the expense of a car note.
