5.9 Cummins
Good Morning,

I have been encountering some peculiar issues with my 2003 RAM 3500 w/ a 5.9L HO Cummins and 48RE. The first dilemma I am facing occurs when shifting from drive to park, the truck will idle in drive at roughly 800RPM. This idle is smooth and consistent, no chops or anything of the sort. Then when dropping it to park the idle RPMs will rise to just around 1100, and will transition from a smooth (but high) idle to a choppy almost "cammed" idle. The choppy/cammed idle has been occurring prior to this but settled at 800-900RPM, however with this new increase to 1100RPM it is quite concerning.

Secondarily, when accelerating between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear the temperature gauge will move to the right about 3/4 to redline, oil pressure will rise to what I'd estimate to be 50-60, and the truck will emit a sound that I can only compare to that of the engine cooling fan. The noise will persist and even heighten as I progress from 1-3 gear. Once the truck hits about 70-80MPH and shifts into 4th/OD the oil pressure will even out on the gauge as well as the temperature.

Regarding the second issue, my assumption is that the noise is a derivative of the engine cooling fan engaging, my concern though is one, that the noise is actually coming from the transmission (original 48RE from the factory) and secondarily why the motor is jumping in temperature like this.

Thank You!
