These kind of problems (rare that they may be) are why I only buy new vehicles nowadays unless we're talking like a $10K project vehicle that I can pay cash for. It would really suck to have to pay monthly payments on something that needed repairs of this size well before you ran out of payments. I ain't talking about replacing an alternator or a power window motor either. Good luck to the OP.

That's the thing... It's still under the factory power train warranty. He isn't the first owner, but his warranty is (supposedly, as sold to him and in guessing in all of the FCA paperwork) the exact same you or I would get with a brand new truck.

My dad has bought several lightly used Corvette still under factory warranty.. Never needed major work but whatever was necessary was covered without question.

In my experience the only reason I ever got rid of fairly new low mileage vehicles is because there was a problem with it that they or I couldn't fix. I figure most cases of this are the same thing. I would rather spend the extra money even if it mean't getting a lower trim level.

Now for me I’ve gotten rid of low mileage vehicles due to the fact they just didn’t fully fit my needs. I don’t mind spending money, but I do mind paying for stuff that I’ll never use.

If anything can be learned, this highlights potential pitfalls of buying used with remaining warranty.

$30,000 for a new motor on a low mile truck!!! I feel really bad for you.

Before you bought it, did your research and CarFax or Equifax show only one owner? And if so, how did you find out now about the sorted history?

This experience is a good argument for "certified" used.

From FCA's standpoint, I can understand them not wanting to warranty something that was clearly abused.

Again, I feel bad for you. And as the previous poster suggested, I would look to a non-dealer diesel shop for replacement quotes. Good luck!

If you have past service records, Magnum-Moss law allows self service for warranty claims, and includes other rights. May research it for info and throw it out in discussions. $30k would justify legal help, if nothing but a stern letter as a start. Exhaust RamCare option first. PITA situation for sure. Intake filter design should have prevented sand intrusion.

Yep. You never know what kind of insane abuse a previous owner subjected the vehicle to.

you should be asking about the average time a normal amount of miles before hatch marks ware off and what standards did they use to make that determination so they in your 4000 miles have concluded it was you ? and not sold to you under false pretests breach of contract

That price is crazy. Repair the Piston and cylinders and dump it.

Dang, getting them to cover something that IS clearly a defect and not abuse is ridiculous.

I'm surprised they didnt go find a new one with a seized engine on the lot to tell you its normal ..

Good Luck with all of that, I feel for you.

i Bought a 2014 ram 2500 with 44k miles on it for 45.5k still under the 5 yr 100k mile warranty, i only had the truck about a year now only put 4k miles on it. i bought the truck to pull my camper. anyway at 48k the engine seizes on the way pack from a camping trip, 800 dollar tow bill. the truck is at the dodge dealership, they are denying the warranty because the vehicle must now have been maintained properly because the diesel engine has pitting on the cylinder walls and no visible crosshatch marks on the cylinders, the Chrysler engineers says its because the engine sucked sand or dirt into the intake. anyway they said its not just recent but most likely the previous owner. these fktards at the dodge dealership says it will cost 30,000 !! thats right 30k to replace the motor, turbo, some controller and a catalytic converter....i'm so pissed. come to find out after some research the vehicle was not a clean one owner but a had 2 previous owners, i live in Utah, it was originally sold here, and its been serviced and sold in Alabama, then Texas, then Colorado where the dealership in grand junction had it for about 9 months and put 5.5k miles on it, who knows maybe it was driven and beat by the idiot salesmen there. anyway, i'm at a loss of what to do at this point, i have a truck i paid 45k for, i owe 41k now and its gonna cost me 30k to fix it, i could have bought a new truck for 75k damn !!!

You were sold a vehicle with a warranty! They should honor it regardless of how it happened because how the hell is it now your fault? I understand it’s the po’s fault for not maintaining the truck but why is it yours when it breaks under warranty when you just bought the dam thing? They said it was the po’s fault right? There’s gotta be something you can do! Man this is making me mad, that’s some real scumbag **** dealership right there!!!

Idk what I would do! Probably have a heart attack if that happened to me! That or the wife would kill me!

So why is it the Dodge dealers fault?? Your service contract says right in it that failures caused by lack of proper maintenance or misuse is NOT covered. IF they said it was probably the previous owner they would normally cover those things with the new owner IF your tr4ansfered the warrantee contract to you.. Assuming they actually said it was the previous owner. There are some options to go to by contacting the national service contracts folks and IF the dealer will stand behind the comment of the previous owner. You transferred the warrantee to your name when you bought the truck, yes?? You should have because that would then have it covered like it is supposed to be. Like the one gentleman said though, if you want you can get the whole thing replaced for a lot less than you quoted amount, but still not free per sed. Good luck there. Have a friend who just had a diesel replaced under warrantee which had internal problems but don't know the particulars, just know they replaced it with a rebuilt motor, not a new one.
