i Bought a 2014 ram 2500 with 44k miles on it for 45.5k still under the 5 yr 100k mile warranty, i only had the truck about a year now only put 4k miles on it. i bought the truck to pull my camper. anyway at 48k the engine seizes on the way pack from a camping trip, 800 dollar tow bill. the truck is at the dodge dealership, they are denying the warranty because the vehicle must now have been maintained properly because the diesel engine has pitting on the cylinder walls and no visible crosshatch marks on the cylinders, the Chrysler engineers says its because the engine sucked sand or dirt into the intake. anyway they said its not just recent but most likely the previous owner. these fktards at the dodge dealership says it will cost 30,000 !! thats right 30k to replace the motor, turbo, some controller and a catalytic converter....i'm so pissed. come to find out after some research the vehicle was not a clean one owner but a had 2 previous owners, i live in Utah, it was originally sold here, and its been serviced and sold in Alabama, then Texas, then Colorado where the dealership in grand junction had it for about 9 months and put 5.5k miles on it, who knows maybe it was driven and beat by the idiot salesmen there. anyway, i'm at a loss of what to do at this point, i have a truck i paid 45k for, i owe 41k now and its gonna cost me 30k to fix it, i could have bought a new truck for 75k damn !!!

Dam man! That’s about the worst story I’ve read yet, I understand your fu*kin pissed I’d be too. If your out of warranty then have a private shop do it, it’s going to cost but nowhere near 30k not even 20k! That’s terrible they sold you a dusted diesel! They probably knew it was going to go, those ******! There’s gotta be something you can do? No? Anybody have any leagal advice for this poor guy.

You were sold a vehicle with a warranty! They should honor it regardless of how it happened because how the hell is it now your fault? I understand it’s the po’s fault for not maintaining the truck but why is it yours when it breaks under warranty when you just bought the dam thing? They said it was the po’s fault right? There’s gotta be something you can do! Man this is making me mad, that’s some real scumbag **** dealership right there!!!

Idk what I would do! Probably have a heart attack if that happened to me! That or the wife would kill me!

Sorry to say but you're probably SOL with the warranty because of the apparent maintenance deficiencies. You *may* have a claim if the vehicle was sold as a one owner CPO because the dealer should have found some issues (dusty intake/turbo e.g.).
As to "why" the obvious thing that comes to mind is the PO ran without the air filter, or some crappy aftermarket setup that didn't seal correctly. But when I see "Texas" there's also the possibility that it's a flood vehicle that ended up in Utah with a washed title. Lastly it might be worthwhile checking with RAM if the engine serial number matches their records.
To fix it take it to a diesel shop. They will know Cummins inside out and are probably able to repair it for less money. E.g. Cylinder sleeves and new pistons instead of a complete engine.

@ramcares the best way to help get the truck fixed
Contact @ramcares they will help. Be patient it’ll probably take 3-4 days and they will offer to help ya.
Sorry for your problem. I had a Peterbilt with a Catapilar motor a 15L it blew up and it cost me $20K for a new crate and install. The shop bill was$20K out the door.

If your motor was not properly maintained, They are well within their rights to not honor the warranty.

Go to a good indie shop if they decide not to honor the warranty.
I had the N-14 Cummins in my Kenworth rebuilt about 4 years ago for under $10,000 and an N-14 is a much larger engine than the one in your pickup.
A good indie shop will check to see what parts on your present motor are reusable and that alone will save you money over a dealer thats just gonna swap in a complete new motor and not even look at yours.
It sucks but sometimes that's what happens when you get a used vehicle .

I always buy CPO and luckily have not had an issue except for Toyota of all companies. I picked up a CPO Scion and the 2nd day I had it, there was hidden damage. I went over that thing before I bought it but I didn't ask them to put it on a rack and lift it. Since it was close to the ground I couldn't get fully under it. 1 owner, Certified Preowned, low miles, no red flags. A CPO vehicle gets fully serviced just to BECOME a CPO versus a used vehicle. The plastic inner fenders and plastic under the front chin and motor were zip tied and taped in. NO WAY THEY COULD HAVE MISSED THAT! It held together until the day after I purchased it and came apart on the interstate. Couldn't hold up to 80mph wind. I fought my ass off and their stance was "We certified it, there was no damage, you did it". and I couldn't do anything about it.

Contact @ramcares and see what they say 1st and if it's not addressed quickly, hire an attorney. I will say though... @ramcares is by far the best and easiest, most helpful customer support I've ever used. IF they can do something, I'd say they would. If not, I'd hunt the dealer like a dog.

Wait a minute. He buys the truck used from the dealer. It sounds like it is still under warranty. He has a warranty failure, and the selling dealer and warranty say,,,the prior history of this truck is now owned by the member. FBS. If the member maintained his required maintenance while he owned it, THEN THE DEALER OWNS THE PROBLEM. John if I understand this correctly,,my pov, it is time to go hard. Give Ramcare a chance to investigate, they are common sense and competent. But have a bull dog attorney ready.

It was certified, so I agree, start talking to an attorney.

This has got to be the worst story that I’ve ever heard of. You buy a vehicle with a warranty for peace of mind, yet the one who sold it are the ones shafting you. Agree with those posting contact RamCares, give them time if you have it to look into it for you.

Not for nothing but the OP posted the same thing in 2 threads here and on the Cummins forum too. They are the only posts and while the story might be true it sure seems weird there are no other posts...

I agree get an attorney. They can't take your money for a warranty and lead you to believe you are covered and then deny it later by no fault of your own. I think they would have to prove that you did something to void the warranty which is going to be nearly impossible to do. Otherwise, they can't take your money for the warranty and give you false hope. As far as you are concerned you NEVER would have driven the vehicle off the lot without a warranty.

Consult a specialist car lawyer, not just any lawyer but a specialist car lawyer as they'll actually know all the specific ways to help you. Maybe look for a lemon law lawyer as they may be competent in your area too ... Good luck

This is more of an issue with the selling dealership pencil whipping a CPO checklist. Even then, FCA and the dealership should be fighting this out on who is liable to make this right since it was sold as a CPO.

and dealers wounder why people like me dont trust them at all. and do our own work.
You should know it’s not the dealer who denies a powertrain warranty claim. It’s FCAs powertrain warranty centre. The dealer itself only presents the information as they’ve found it, file the paperwork then the powertrain warranty centre says yes or no, not the individual dealer itself.

Maybe I am missing something here but I have read the OP's post three times now and I don't see where he said that the truck was a CPO. Just the balance of the 5/100k powertrain warranty. Of course it is getting late and my eyes are getting a bit crossed.

Looks like you are correct, the op never said it was a cpo.
