Looking at 2 5th gen Laramie 2500's. One is 6.4 Hemi with 40k miles other is 6.7 cummins with 78k miles. Needing opinions and experiences (good and bad) from anyone that has or has had one

Thanks

Technically there are no 5th generation 2500’s. More like 4.5ish generation. What years are both of those trucks?

Agree with nlambert, 100% depends what you are doing with it. Mine is gas, never gave diesel a thought because I knew I didn't need it. The guys pulling 15k down the interstate everyday, no doubt you would want the cummins.

The best part of getting a 4.5 gen Ram with the 6.4 is the ZF eight speed transmission it’s great.

I would recommend getting the 4.10 gears with the HEMI.

The cummins is a 2021, Hemi is a 2022 with 3.73 gears. I do moderate towing of 5-9k pounds. I currently have a 6.4 with 4.10 gears but it is regular cab and I'd like more space for family and stuff that I'd prefer not be in the bed. Was mainly curious cause both these years are apparently COVID years

Well.... either will do the job just fine. You just have to decide a few things.

A gasser will require less emissions maintenance and won't stress much at all pulling that kind of load and you'll get a higher payload. However, sometimes it will be cumbersome to find a spot to refuel while hooked to a trailer. When towing, you'll get significantly worse mpg than the Cummins. When empty, probably a wash.

A diesel will not even know that load is behind it. It's easier to swing through fuel islands at truck stops to refuel and you'll get significantly better mpg while towing. However, the emissions system doesn't like daily driver duty, so there's a good chance you'll see a failure at some point and they can be pricey. You also lose about 900 lbs of payload when you toss the Cummins in it.

Completely up to you.

Personally, I pretty much ignore the Covid year mentions. My 2021 Armada is a covid vehicle and it's been flawless since we've had it. Got about 86k on it now. My camper is also a covid camper and knock on wood, it's required less work to date than any other I've owned. It's literally been across almost every state. My one touch awning switch went out on our last trip. :)

Everything you buy is a roll of the dice nowadays. Doesn't matter what year it came from.
