6.1 SRT8 Ram Swap

Does the 6.1 engine follow the same “pre-eagle” and “eagle” years the 5.7 does? If he’s got an 09 6.1, will that be a different reluctor wheel? That’s gonna be an issue with the computer

Welll I have the computer of the srt8 to would it work with the ram

The 09 reluctor ring is 58t. The 05 pcm uses 32t. As for the 09 6.1 pcm working, the pinouts would need to be checked. Let us know..

There is an additional problem I hadn't consider. The 05 uses PCI-Bus for communication and the 06+ uses CAN-Bus. I don't believe them to be compatible.

I personally wouldn’t bother with the Jeep computer. I think you are going to run into a ton of electrical gremlins. It would be much easier to run the engine off the 05 computer. You’ll need to compare the two engines side by side to see if all the sensors are located in the same place and that they have the same style connectors. I have a feeling this isn’t going to be as easy as you think...

Here is a link for the 2003 ram service manual. It has a lot of info that will help, and it has all the electrical wiring diagrams and pin outs. In my signature below is a link to my Flickr photo account, I have an album with the 2003 and 2005 computer pinouts. I have no idea where you can find the 09 Jeep service manual, but you need to get one if you want to consider that computer. Then you need to compare each pcm connector side by side between your truck and the Jeep computer to see if they are compatible. My guess is no. You will probably run into a bunch of other stuff in the vehicle not working if you try combining harnesses. I find it highly unlikely 2 computers 6 years apart from 2 different vehicles will match up.

That’s what I figured. I’m also doubtful that the 09 pcm will run much of anything on the 03 truck. I guess he will have to see. I wonder if he can change the reluctor wheel from an earlier 6.1. I’m not familiar with the 6.1 engines as much, but as a reminder the 6.1 should be a 4 bolt reluctor wheel, the 5.7 stock reluctor wheel is a 3 bolt. So there is another difference to be aware of.

Just re-read the thread to get familiar with it again. I have a few other things to mention to think about. The original guy posting here who did the swap used an 06 engine, that would have been the same reluctor wheel, same “pre-eagle” motor as the 5.7 engine you currently have. He also used the truck timing cover and had to modify it to use the 6.1 intake because there is clearance issues with that to begin with. I have no idea if you can get the 03 style truck timing cover on the newer 6.1, so all your accessories will be in a different position and possibly have different connectors. I don’t know if the Jeep engine used the truck or car timing cover, maybe Ghost can post a picture of his engine. You’ll probably have to deal with moving the intake box/filter or making something custom to get it on the passenger side. Looking at the original pictures at the beginning of the thread, the op had his intake on the center or drivers side, but didn’t have any good pictures for sure.

That will be a 52 tooth reluctor wheel, and only work with the 09 computer, as stated above. I don’t think anyone here knows if the 09 computer will run the rest of your truck.

Honestly I doubt in the end it will be as good of a deal with all that electrical problems you’ll run into. My honest opinion would be swap in the 05 pcm, buy a forged 6.1 or 6.4 stroker kit, and build your own. With my build I’m sure the hp is over 500 at the engine, more then a 6.1 has. I bought a used 5.7 block (way cheaper then a 6.1 block) and had all the machine work necessary to freshen up the block done, built the rotating assembly and then simply pulled my motor out, swapped over some parts off my old engine and put the new one in. I had a completely brand new engine with good parts and more hp, without all that major headache of the computer issues from the newer style engines. Again, my opinion but it worked great for me

Heck it’s gonna sound biased but I even have my old 5.7 short block that needs machine work that would be a good starting block for a stroker build. It’s for sale cheap haha

I was looking at the engines and from 2006 to 2009 they look the same
