Was sitting for a year before I picked it up and got it going again. New plugs, o2 sensors, cats off, new lifters(originally thought this was the noise). Runs strong but has a very noticeable knock/ping that seems to along with piston and not valve train. Stays there cold and warm, and it reacts a little different with load vs letting off pedal a little. I can get it to "flutter" by letting off the pedal so I'm leaning towards piston slap. I have not changed anything in the ignition besides plugs(which all look good) but I might head down that road since it's cheaper than tearing apart at this point. Thoughts?

+1 on the piston slap. But maybe not. Does yours sound like this one?

This one ended up having a broken rocker bolt which set the pushrod free.

I was hoping that was the case but not it since the removed those and bolted them back on while replacing the lifters

The way you are describing the noise my bet is on rod bearings because of the way you can make it "flutter" by letting off of the accelerater pedal.

That about the rod bearings too. Has anyone had success changing them from the bottom side without removing the top end. I've seen someone do it on another vehicle, just not this v10

Yes, you can put rod bearings in it from the bottom. Remove the oil pan, oil pump and pickup tube and start pulling rod caps.

At 95,000 I went through my 94 V-10 and all the rod bearing were into the copper layer. The mains were beautiful.
