I have a '16 4wd quad cab sport and it needs new tires. I'm considering the Falken Wildpeak AT3w 275/60 20 but its SL load ID and 115T service description is just a slight improvement over the stock Goodyear SRA's. I guess what I really would like to know is how much weight can I safely tow with this tire and should I be concerned about off road durability if it's only a 4 ply? The 275/55 20 has an XL load ID, slightly higher service description and is a 6 ply.

Thanks
Michael

Michelin LTX M/S won’t be cheap but you can’t go wrong unless your off-roading in the mud! My opinion.

If you do a search, you will find a lot of reviews on the wildpeak AT3, all good. Iirc, one person was surprised at the thickness of the sidewall. Depending on the terrain you off road on, they should be fine.

A little arithmetic will tell you how much you can tow with your choice of tires. It’s plainly marked on the side of each. As long as their combined capacity equals or exceeds your axle capacity, you should be good.

No help here on off road.

I read through a few long threads on the tire here and no doubt about it, it’s proven itself to be a solid and well liked tire that offers a lot of bang for the buck...hence my interest. I just want to make sure I’m getting enough tire for my needs while I’m doing a replacement and I didn’t really find a few answers I needed in any of the threads I read through.

Ok...that helps. So, I guess if the tire load rating exceeds axle capacity then the limitation on tow weight would be dictated by axle capacity...and one would need to know tongue weight of the load to know if axle capacity is being exceeded, correct?

Michael, They are a great tire from what I have read, Check these out. Some good info and I had the same questions as you about ratings ! Bummer they dropped the ply rating, That was easy to understand lol https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=195

I’ve read up on the descriptions for tire specs and ratings and that’s what’s left me a little reluctant to pull the trigger on the 275/60 20...it looks like a rugged and durable tire, but the “P” designation, low ply count, and SL load index make it read like medium duty tire on paper...not much unlike the stock Goodyear. It’s a little odd since the Wildpeak AT3 275/55-20 and 285/60-20 have more plies and a higher load index. I’d be all over the 285/60-20 but there is a significant price increase between the 275 and 285. The 275/55 is about the same price as the 275/60, but I’m not sure how the lower sidewall profile will look or ride comfort will suffer with a 4wd. Thanks for the links.

To answer your question. http://www.falkentire.com/tires/light-truck-suv-cuv-tires/wildpeaka/t3w-tire scroll down to size / specification, click, and you'll find data on all their tires.

I love my AT3's!!!

Thanks for the link. I’ve looked over all the data and I’m just trying to translate specs into real world performance under more than Passenger tire duty, which is all the 275\60 seems to be designed for.

Here's how I see it. Their 275/60R20 is not only factory spec but carries a slightly better load, is an AT, and snow rated. This tire more than suffices all RAM 1500 capability needs. The fact this tire is also 4 ply, like factory, helps maintain the smooth Cadillac like ride I've always enjoyed.

That’s correct. Don’t forget to add in fuel, stuff you carry in the bed, passengers, etc. Smartest way is to get it weighed on your way camping. Then you know. No guessing.

So there’s some good info...the ply count contributes to ride quality. No doubt, I too enjoy the ride quality of my truck and wouldn’t want to compromise it much, if any.

I put these on last year. I do outside sales in oil and gas. No issues with off road/lease/gravel roads. I've had a razor blade in one tire that didn't puncture the tire and I've got a screw in one now but it's still holding air.

I'm over 60k on this set of tires and I just bought a 2nd set. And I did a horrible job of rotating...probably only rotated 3 times.

I put these tires: Falken Wildpeak AT3w 275/60 20 on my last Ram. I was amazed at how good they were for the price. Quiet on dry roads, really good in the snow, excellent in the rain. They wore pretty well....at 24,000 miles they still had about half tread. And, they look good.

They were recommended to me by a guy that does a lot of off road hunting and camping. He pulled a 6-7000 pound camper and never had any isssues.

I do very little off road stuff, but when the crappy wranglers wear out, I will no doubt by another set of Falkens...I just liked them.
