Little info on my truck just as an FYI in case any of this is useful at all:

2014 Ram 1500, 5.7 Hemi, BBK shorty headers (leaking again, unfortunately), Carven muffler, 113K miles, owned it since it was at 43k.

A few months ago I noticed a strange hesitation at lower speeds (25-35 mph) that seemed like a transmission issue. Since then it has gotten much worse. Now it feels like I'm hitting a rough patch in the road and the truck will even shake a bit while hovering around the 25-35mph range. Only does it whith gradual acceleration, doesn't seem to have the issue when I floor it. Also, when at a consistent speed (like with cruise control on) the truck will rev up a little bit about 200-300 rpm every 3 seconds consistently. Kinda feels like it's pulsing, and it's pretty much always every 3 seconds on the dot. At first I thought it was a transmission issue, but I brought it to a very reputable transmission shop that I trust and they were adamant that it was not transmission related. They suggested that I look into a PCM reflash, and if it wasn't that, to look at the heads/valves.

Next I brought it to two different Ram dealers that both told me the same thing. Mopar doesn't have a reflash for the truck unless I had a new engine or transmission put in, or something like that, and that they don't know where to start because my truck has a lift and headers and I should return it to stock and see if that fixes it. Got quoted from one of the dealers new MDS solenoids and intake manifold gasket as a "shot-in-the-dark, maybe this is what it is" thing, not knowing if they are actually bad or not.

I've heard of people buying diablo tuners to relfash and recode their own PCM's, but I don't want to spend the money on one without asking you guys to see if there's anything else that may come to mind, or if anyone has fixed this issue before.

I appreciate your time, thanks

Any codes? Id lean towards weak spark. Either plugs or poor connection to the plugs/plug.

With the intermittent revving with cruise control id guess you have a spark leak in the coil boots.

I would go through all the plugs, coil boots and connectors

No codes. Could this still be an issue if there are no codes?

Its possible the PCM hasent picked up on it yet. Intermittent issues are hit and miss sometimes with pushing codes

I feel like something like ignition coils or plugs would have been something the dealers would have figured out. Am I wrong to think that, or is it hard to actually know if they're bad without actually taking them all off and replacing?

You can delete mds 3 ways to check that, I have no idea why they would shot and dark that item, avoid that dealer. What transmission, 6 or 8 speed

Hi.... To Begin With.... (1).. I'm New to the Forum, (2) I'm an Old Guy (72).... but a Longtime Retired Mechanic... PRE Fly by Wire Times,.. and (3) New Owner of an Older Ram (2011, 1500, 4x4 crew Laramie w/ 5.7 Hemi w/ auto ? Trans... could be 4- 6- or 8 speed... I cant tell... but theres no slippage) The PO only owned it for a VERY Short Time and SEEMED Clueless Mechanically....in Fact,...he prob Bought it on the Flip. But it was a decent deal,... what I wanted,...in my Price Range (Cash Buy),... Had a *RAMBOX.. and the Leather/Vinyl interior that i Liked... So BadaBOOM... I Owned it. It had Current Tags and no ck eng Lights giving me the Impression it had Passed Emissions (I'm in California with the Dreaded "Cali Emissions" BS to pass whereby ALL Environments in the system MUST Reset correctly before it's allowed to Pass on Title Transfer & Registration. I Made Purchase at Night .... and as the Only thing as bad as my 72yr old Prostate,...are my 72yr old EYES that Don't work after Dark for Driving (Cataracts are like looking thru Shattered Glass with oncoming headlights!)... so Basicly.... I didn't drive it. I Know, I Know,... Just Stupid.... But the Problem with being a wrench for the better part pf 40yrs...is you only look at any Problems that May Come up,.... as Challenges to overcome that Come at Wholesale Shop Parts Prices and Free Labor! Again.... Just Stupid. However... That Backround story now gives you something to work with. The Next Day... Picking up the Rig & the 90mi drive Home... I got a Ck Eng Light on the Way and Hesitation on acceleration at low speeds,... maybe the 2k range. Pulled into a gas station for Fuel (Something that Happens a LOT...but I'm thinking thats Prob Normal for this Truck anyway). When I started the Truck back up at the Pump... NO Ck Engine Light (Except the Tire Air Management System) No Trouble Lights ever came on again....but the Acceleration surging continued. SO... No Trouble lights ment that it was Time to do the Title Work. And THAT's when the REAL Problems Began! Trying to Pass Smog... there was ONE of the 4 02 sensors that wouldn't Reset completely....but would not Fail enough to set a Code. BUT... was it one of the sensors....or the Sensor MONITOR. I believe thats a PCM Thing. However,... thats just the emissions environment. Was WHATEVER THAT issue is... is that enough to adversely effect the Acceleration into Surging? In Fact,.. THAT seemed more like a TPS thing.... So Enter the Throttle Body. Had the Oil Changed and a "Fuel System Service" More Trips to the Smog Ck Place and still nothing changed. My thought aws to just change All the 02's as a set,... but for That I would want OEM... $400 worth of sensors to POSSABLY Solve the Slow Reset of one....but NOT Solve the surging Issue... Gave me Pause. And, as a wrench, I know that Throwing Parts at a Problem without even knowing what the problem is, can not only be expensive....but can cause you to lose the true source of how it all started to begin with. So I started reading Everything and anything I could find on the ol' Interweb...only to discover LOTS of Opinions with few solutions. So.... on to a recommended Shop. 2 weeks there and another Throttle body Cleaning,,, Still NG. A $600 Throttle body replacement... and shop said it ran WORSE.... so he Took it back off and put my old one back on. I Orig suspected the Shop didn't know,...or follow,... the "Relearn" when installing the New One...but Figured putting the Old One Back on may require that anyway. Still... No Codes...although out of "Alldata" procedures and out of desperation, he said he went Old School and started shaking wires... then NOTHING would Work. PERFECT starting point for a Wrench!. But it apparently Fixed Itself and then Ran Better.... But Not 100%. He was going on Vacation for a week so I figured it was DEALER Time @ $200 an hour (or whatever).. It was 200 Bucks to Plug into the dealers Machine.... but I Bit my Lip and Took it there.....only to find out from the Service Mgr.... that THEY Couldn't Track & Solve the Issue(s) without a TROUBLE CODE! I was Shocked beyond words! Basicly.... the DEALER wouldn't be able to read The Values within the Trucks Systems and understand those numbers enough to make repairs.... or even Suggest what I Might try! Yet they would Still have to Charge me the $200. OK... So... No Noises, ticking or otherwise.. Smooth as Butter at Idle. Tons of Power. Great and Consistent Oil pressure (Besides... I've Seen Plenty of Flat Cam Lobes and busted Lifters in My Days....but Never in an engine that Showed no signs, ...smells, or Sounds that Announced it. In addition... This engine may have been changed in the trucks past life,,,, I have no way of knowing and felt it rather worthless info as the engine equipment was prob transfered over anyway. OK Boys.... Talk to me.... nuts & Bolts. I will Understand Everything you are saying.... Except if you tell me there is a switch under the Dash that can be flipped and solve Everything.... at which time I would step on my Own Toe & Smack myself in the Head with a Brick... BUT...at Least I would have A Smile on my face. GO!..... Thankx much in advance! JZ
