Hello, I have afew questions: 2004 Ram 1500 5.7L - Power Steering
Developed a leak in the power steering system about 4 months ago. Finally had time to fix it. (for reference, I lost about 1.5 quarts total in refills the last 4 months).
From what I could see, there were 3 possible places for the leak(s). At the pump, at the high pressure sensor and/or the high pressure fitting at the steering rack.
I replaced the pump to start. Seems to be holding up well and solved the obvious leak.
1. Does anyone have the torque specs for the mounting bolts of the PS pump?
2. Two types of pumps for this model. Mine seemed like the common one, which used a snap ring on the backside of the pump. What is the purpose of the "cavity" on the engine block where the PS pumps mounts? My old PS pump was caked in crud and that cavity was caked in crud as well.
Now for the high pressure sensor. There still seemed to be a leak after I replaced the pump.
3. Does the high pressure sensor go bad often? Meaning, does it leak often?
4. Looks like the sensor is just threaded on the HP line, should I just replace the entire hose with sensor? Or can I just get a sensor and thread in?
Now for the connections at the rack. Looks like I might be spared and there was no leak there... just runoff.
Thanks for any insights you can send my way.
