Anyone in the upper Midwest or Eastern side have their truck undercoated? I know there is the black tar style Ziebart does, as well as a Cosmoline type wax and maybe something else. So can those of you who have done so, relate your success or failure with the process. Maybe too early to tell on a 5th gen, but previous experience? My poor 98 Dakota that I got in California, rusted to death quickly once the Wisconsin salt got hold of it. I'd like to keep the new Laramie looking good for as long as possible

I live in the Buffalo NY area and have had my vehicles treated with Krown, that is an oil type spray. It's close to $200 all-in per application and should be re-applied yearly. Problem I have is I'm not trilled with the job my local Krown shops do. Seems real skimpy of a job.

Since then I've been using FF and Krown myself. That again should be done yearly. Cosmoline and higher dollar wax/oil sprays hold up longer, but are a lot more $$$, so it's all about gives and takes.

Stay clear of Ziebart and the black nightmare stuff they use. My father in law insisted on letting them do his 2017 Nissan Frontier. It's been treated 3x and it basically can't be worked on underneath now given everything is encased in that horrendous crap. All it does is trap moisture and ruin everything including electrical connectors. He basically paid like $600 up front and he gets "free" yearly re-sprays provided you don't go over a year. Go over a year and no more freebies. Every yearly visit all they do is try to sell you paint sealant, interior sealant. A remote start, etc..etc.. Horrible.

I have ziebart from being told it's good and seeing lasting effects of it. But there are a lot of horror stories. Best thing is just oil based mixtures or fluid film. I'm considering letting my undercoating up with ziebart and just fluid filming yearly. Ziebart looks good and if done right can be a good thing. Yes overspray is a real thing but working on a vehicle undercoating with anything will have downsides.

Stay away from ziebart please so help me. It rotted my truck. All there doing is having you come back every year to cover up the rust.
I have sheets of thick goo falling off with rotted metal inside.

Its locking in moisture and rotting from inside out

And they cover nothing. Me and my brother both have rust and they wont cover as they always find excuse.

Fluid film kit.
Did on wifes new car and is awsome. Or have someone do it like krown. These are actually coating snd not just covering up

I cannot stress enough to stay away ftom zeibart

My 2011 is emaculate from me but not emaculste due to frame rot from zeibart undercoating and bubling paint on fender they wont cover

Stay away

For those diy guys out there who think there has to be a better way, we build a home made sprayer that sprays a 50/50 chainsaw bar oil and WD40 combination using a long wand attached to a modified car paint sprayer. The WD40 creeps the oil into the tight corners in a vehicle and has been protecting our vehicles for years.
Works very well.
Typically takes about a 1/2 jug of each per vehicle.

Do you have video of this being used?

I will pull out the rig and upload some pics. We typically spray in the fall so that the oil is freshest going into winter.

Here is a couple pics of the setup.

In the picture of the tank, The bottom port by the red tap is connected to the air compressor.
The top port comes out of the tank and is connected via air hose to the paint inlet of the paint gun.

The second tank pic shows the tube go to the bottom of the tank.

The last pic is of the converted car paint sprayer with a long and short wand to reach tight places. The setup works very well. The white adapter leaks a little from years of use but overall it's a sweet set up.
Feedback more than welcome.

There is nothing to be gained by any aftermarket coating. Better if driving on salted roads to power wash the underside of the truck more often.

I used a grease type undercoating on my 2001 Dakota, it worked well enough for the most part but was absolutely miserable to work on.
On my 16 Ram I have Ziebart, the black is only used on the undercarriage, everywhere else uses a lighter rustproofing.
My trucks sit for extended periods outside, in a high humidity environment that uses brine mix for winter use ( 10X worse than pure salt) western PA. and the Ram is perfect.

I used to dread crawling under the Dakota, as you came out wearing a grease suit.

It's so bad here than transmission and oil pans rust away, my engine blocks look as if they have been sitting in a lake. I can go out most mornings and the pans are just soaking wet from the nightly dew. Since it isn't driven often, that moisture just stays there day after day.

On average, the trucks have gotten a wash job maybe 5-6 times a year. Wax every several years, I think the 16 has been waxed once.

Been doing my own frames for years with great results.

Fluid film is great stuff but takes a while.
Another effective method is boiled linseed oil thinned with mineral spirits and sprayed on with garden sprayer.

Wear old clothes and do it outside.

My ziebart looks good but I've heard the stories(after I had it done). The oil type sprays are so messy to work on I agree. Here in Ohio you have have a truck with 100k that has no rockers, no fenders, and flaky frame. Especially a Chevy. Man those frames just go

I used LineX. Not sure if it is going to work as I cannot see inside some of the places coated. They have a reasonable price. Around here in the winter the roads are covered with salt, so far no signs of rust but only one season.

I talked to them yesterday. Sounds like they use a wax based product in certain areas and a black colored tar or something on the frame? How does yours look? My understanding is that the undercoating is not the same as the bed coating material. The price seems reasonable.

I know this gets linked to a lot on the forums, but my experiences with ziebart, at least around where I live, mirror what is seen in this video. Like I say, my father-in-laws basically new 2017 Nissan Frontier crew cab 4x4 will eventually be ruined by the stuff just like you see here, yet my FIL is happy to have it covered back up for "free" every year.

Unfortunately that video for me gets an asterisk behind it. I have seen chevys younger than that with worse frames. So I think trumps response works here....it is what it is.

Done wrong , spraying over and trapping damp dirt will cause this outcome. This process and product has this gamble associated. Fluid film products are very slimy and make everything look FILTHY. Much like any job, if it is to be done right, it's done best by you. I had 80 miles on mine. Had it undercoated. I won't be returning. I'll let my "warranty" lapse. FYI the warranty is the same as RAM but is not full replacement.

My Ziebart gets touched up yearly, but not for free.
Also, I told them I changed the speakers and didn't notice much inside, they said no problem we will respray the doors for you - and spray they did, I know for sure there is rustproofing in the bottom of the doors where I want it now.

They also went over and sprayed the brake lines near the engine as I asked, basically they did anything I asked to be done without giving me any grief.

I have no complaints.
