Are the K&N drop in air filters a good buy. Is there an increase in horsepower. Or, should I save up and install a K&N air intake instead.
2011 ram 4.7.
My first truck. Love it.

You'll be lucky to notice an actual HP gain either way.
With a K&N open CAI you will get a lot of engine noise at WOT if that's what you're after.

I could be wrong, but i thought only AirRaid had a CAI for the later 4.7's.

I have the AirRaid CAI on my 4.7 and other then my wallet being lighter by a bunch,it's not very noticable.

A good filter and build yourself a homemade ram air tube for your stock airbox will probably accomplish just about as much performance wise, and leaves a bunch of money in your pocket.

if its possible, buy an Airaid Mid Tube, then run custom ducting into the bottom of the airbox from the bumper. then get a drop in filter.

CAI's makes a lot of noise, they look pretty and makes you feel good. Stick with a drop in--you'll be just as happy and have some money left to spend on important stuff---like beer.

The only reason I went with the Volant Intake, is cause the price was a steal. Plus is gave me a smooth flowing mid tube. If Airaid made a mid tube for the 4th gen hemi's then I would have gone that route.

I stick with stock....if its only going to give you 5-10hp (which it won't and you'll only notice the placebo effect) then its not worth the money.

I immediately noticed better throttle response and a really nice low growl with my S&B. Love it. Combined with the Magnaflow my truck sounds great front to back.

You wouldn't take 5-10 gain from an intake alone? Stick to your stock then lol.

With my new 5.7 I just bought a "Green" filter and installed it into the stock box.

There are countless video's showing there's no real gain from JUST a CAI. Some show a little, and some show a little more when the vehicle's going fast.

Personally, unless you plan to tune, and do the exhaust, I'd drop a filter in which allows you to clean and reuse it.

You buying, send me 2 if so

I'd say $300 or less would be fairly cheap for those gains. Not new to the game are you? I bought mine, get your own! Lol.

Too each his own i guess.
I don't know,i might be new, only been working on things since i was kid in the early 70's,with a garbage bag full of timeslips from 1/4 mile tracks,so maybe i am new, lol.
Personally for a "iffy" 5 horses on a 4.7 i think by the OP's first post he'd be better off with a good filter, and if he's ambitious build himself a ram air tube to feed the stock air box for less then 50 bucks.
Then he's also got the satisfaction of building it himself,with-out spending a pile of money.
Anybody can spend money,i have more respect for the guy who builds it himself

Airraid sells a DIY kit now with a custom blow molded tube that comes with several bends to it,so for you guys looking for an intermediate tube, check them out

New age vs older age I guess. I however have no experience with the 4.7, so I may be blowing smoke lol.
