Alice needs help

my 2002 5.9 gas motor just started knocking one day out of the blue. it starts and runs but as soon as i get to about 30 mph it starts knocking. can someone please tell me what this might be? some suggestions before i drop alot of money into rebuilding this motor. Please help me

Sounds like a bearing went bad. You need to have it diagnosed before throwing parts at it.

I did and he told me that i needed to have the top end rebuilt so that means the entire motor. Cant just do the top end. Can anyone tell me where i can get a rebuild and a place that can put it in for me for under 4000? I need my truck for work and i cant work without it

Top end is Heads, cam ,lifters, timing chain, intake manifold valve covers, you probably wiped out a cam lob thats giving you that tick at 30 mph like you said, did he pull a valve cover off to verify that one of the rocker arms aren't moving to full stroke, He can do what's called a Leak down test that checks the lower end for wear.
If he's good he should be able to do it for less that 4,000.

Lower end is, Engine block, crankshaft, connecting rods, wrist pins, pistons, rings, crank bearings, connection rod bearings, Cam bearings Oil pump, oil pan.

I think he means he wants to do it all and not just the top end. No one can do an entire rebuild plus remove and replace it for $4000.00

Alice how did you make out, I lived in Northern Colorado for 6 years and I believe you can go to a pick and pull (Junk Yard) you may be able to get a decent complete Engine Assy, Look for something that has rear end damage, you may even get one that you can start and hear run, Its worth a try, How many miles on your engine.
