Anyone installed the fold-down AMP Research bed step? I'm looking at getting one but I noticed you have to remove and leave off one of the bumper brackets. Is this safe to do? Will it cause integrity issues? Or the bumper to rattle or be loose?

Other than that, I love the idea. I'm not gonna lie, I'm short and getting in and out of my bed is a pain. I think this is a great idea and works even with the tailgate down unlike a hitch step. Thoughts?

I have one on mine, and don't think there's any structure weakening. No rattling at all - make sure you get the one for the dual exhaust if that's what you have. I got mine from RealTruck.

I have one on mine as well. No issues whatsoever. Works great.
Rheem I installed mine I added more red loctite to keep all hardware tight. It comes with blue loctite already on the bolt threads but I've found out on 3 of our company trucks that is not enough. We had to take those back apart and add the red loctite. So far mine has stayed tight and I have found no negative side effects from the removal of the bumper bracket that is required for the install.
I ordered mine off Amazon after looking on Amp site to get the correct part number for my truck.

One thing that I forgot to note earlier is if you end up in dirty/muddy areas often you may want to get mud flaps. The step gets encrusted with mud otherwise. I'm going to be ordering some soon for just this reason...

I just ordered one today....did not even think about the dual exhaust part. I have single exhaust, but have thought about doing a dual set up for the sound. However, I have the lifetime warranty, so don't want to void any of that.

I’ve been looking at the amp step. How sturdy is it? Can it handle over 350lbs? (And no I don’t weigh that much...but with a box or carrying something...maybe)

Yeah I read that too. I guess at 301lbs it breaks.

I didn’t know that maybe somebody changes a bolt to grade8 or something like that to make it stronger.

I'm sure the bolts that are in it from the factory are by far the strongest piece of the whole step. They are 10.9 metric now so that is equivalent to grade 8. I would think it will break somewhere else before the bolts break so changing them out won't gain you anything.

I have them but can honestly say I have never gone over 300lbs on them so have no idea when it will break, all you can do is go by what they suggest. I'm sure it will hold more. How much? Who knows... I've never heard of anyone breaking one though.

One word of caution, careful how you place your foot on the pad. It kinda overhangs front the mounting point towards the outside of the truck. You may create stress and possible early failure if too much weight is placed on the outside edge. Have one on my ‘18 2500, very handy to help with getting up into the bed.

oe542bob is spot on about foot placement. In order to get mine to fit properly, I had to offset the pad to the left. I only used it a handful of times before it broke on me. I weigh about 270lbs, and was stepping backward down from the tailgate, with my right foot still on the tailgate. When it broke, I fell backward, pivoting so I landed flat on my back. My truck has a 6" lift and 35" tires, so it was a bit of a drop, and I landed in gravel. Needless to say, I hurt all over from the fall, and had many interesting bruises from the gravel. Fortunately, I suffered no serious injuries.
When I contacted the company, they immediately started backpedaling, accusing me of installing it incorrectly, and not stepping on the supported section. Nowhere in the manual was anything stipulated about either.
If you get one, I would recommend getting short carriage bolts, washers, and nylock nuts, and drill it to bolt completely through the pad. It's a great concept, and works really well. The hollow underneath and small screws, however, make for an extremely dangerous product.

Another option to consider: Traxion Tailgate Ladder. It is inexpensive and works great. Install to open to the side you need most. With my travel trailer I mount mine to open to the right.

My new 2020 Laramie 2500 tail gate sits too high to use the current Traxion ladder. However, they say they will have a new ladder next year that should work with the higher tail gates. It will also be made of aluminum.

I have them on my 2016 1500 and my 2020 3500. They install and work as advertised - very pleased with both. I also offset the pad to the far left. I suspected that mounting might be weak but have had no problems.

I like EvilTwin's suggestion of a through bolt. I might do that just for peace of mind.

Yea, I think it would be a good idea too. Maybe bolting it through, and adding a flat spacer across would help the integrity.
Glad EvilTwinV2 didn’t get seriously injured in the fall. Have you replaced the pad? These trucks are so high, you need something to help to get up into the bed area.
