I was thinking about getting a cold air for the truck. Which one has the best performance? I'm not shelling out $600 for a mopar I already know that. Which one would you recommend?

They're all going to be about the same. There really is not "best" intake.

He bout covered it right there, all will produce small gains. Intakes won't produce big HP or TQ gains.

Volant is currently working on one for the Rams with the sport hood to make it functional. I am waiting for that.

volant would be the better option. as it makes the hood functonal and the lower scoop for the "colder" air... when its made for the rams

i like my Vararam, though they dont have one for the 4th gens yet. it makes the engine bay look cooler.
you could always make your own Cold Air Intake. couple guys on the site have done that.

Eh, what kinda driving do you do most, city or highway?

It's about 50/50. And yea I am workin on integrating functional scoops on my own. I priced together an intake on my 350z I had and it was just as good as any name brand plus I got that loud whistle too :)

You will gain no horsepower unless the CAI is working in conjunction with other mods like headers, catback etc... expect no gain in MPG's either, sorry more air means more fuel.

Yeah, that's not true. A true CAI will net you free flowing smooth colder air than your stock intake can. Cold air is denser and heavier than warm air ..... meaning that their is actually more air in a cold cubic foot then in a warm cubic foot... so in theory you'd be delivering a higher volume of air into the engine. And the more volume of air you can cram in the cylinder walls the more powerful the explosions are going to be..........needless to say............ more horsepower, and better mpg.

How do you NOT gain anything?

Im sure the endless dynos via youtube for intakes... that show gains are all lies...
MAYBE

...BUT BACK ON SUBJECT....

You will just have to research and ask (youtube).... most have gone with volant/Vararam/BFI
and tons more....

i have always been a K&N buyer. and never had problems

for a 4th gen Hemi I really don't see much to put an intake actually get an intake. The OEM tube is direct and smooth with no restrictions in it. The OEM box doesn't have any chambers in it and a big unrestricted short duct to the fender. Only thing I think that would be cost effective is just get a drop-in filter and call it done. Unless you like the cool factor.

Now on the otherside my 4.7 Durango had that stupid intake hat and crappy tube to the airbox so a intake was well worth the upgrade.

Dodge trucks use Speed Density systems NOT Mass Air Flow. Huge difference when talking about the effects of a CAI. Do your research if you don't understand.

No hating.

Anyway I really like my AirRaid. If I remember correctly lowered the intake temp from like 120 to 80 and that was in summer. I'll plug my reader in today and see what I get.

ALL metal intakes have heat sink (the process of absorbing heat into the material and putting off heat along with it) the composite intakes dont have near as much heat sink. All CAI's have some sort of heat absorption but a composite or plastic one will work much better at keeping the air cooler. my AIT reading dropped nearly 30* (when outside air temp was 80* and truck was at normal running temp 176*) when i installed my K&N Aircharger kit, which many independent tests have shown creates a 14hp gain on a stock VVT Hemi

I think I've seen the greatest impact on not only my hemi-powered Ram but, also my wife's Camaro by using a Vararam. The dryer-vent style hoses that mount in the bumper to draw 'cooler' air (not from the engine bay) seems to work the best for me. They tend to be pricey, but then again: the technology that goes into the development of the product? How many times will you purchase a CAI? Dyno tests on a friends car with the Vararam showed he picked up 22 hp, so there are gains to be made.

i agree vararam puts alot of engineering and testing into there CAI, but a huge factor in aftermarket parts in TTM, the time it takes to get the product out to market. ive called and emailed vararam so many times i cant even count asking about there intake and they never gave me the same answer. and that was last spring and its still not out yet. im not willing to wait a year and spend more just for a few more ponies.

after all the research i complied when i was searching for a CAI, all the new VVT engines that are in production really dont gain much like pre-VVT ones did. the systems are engineered to make the most out of the already incoming air and maximizes its potential. so it short, a new engine CAI really isnt much for cold air performance, more for looks and sound.
