I just bought a 2006 with a 5.7 Hemi. Great truck and it's my first Dodge in general. I've noticed when cruising at around 30 to 40 MPH that my custom exhaust sounds bogged out until I hit the gas and speed up. I have just purchased the truck and I'm ready to get it tuned up anyway (new intake, tuneup ...etc) Any ideas where to start.

Thanks for any input you can give me, also first of many posts on the Ram Forums.

I can't remember what speed the MDS kicks in, but most people complain about how it sounds when it kicks in.

Another case of MDS.

Yep. Multiple displacement system, turns it into a big 4 cylinder when cruising. Through a nice open exhaust, the best way I can describe it is it sounds like an underwater helicopter beneath the truck.

Since nobody has mentioned it, a diablosport tuner can turn MDS off. I highly recommend it, sounds much better, and I've noticed no loss in fuel economy

I know that MDS was introduced in the hemis in 2004, but was it put in the trucks of 2004?

Thanks for the info. I thought this might have been something contributing to my horrible highway driving in my 04. I guess it's just my gears w/ my lift.

Anyway to solve the issue? Or a fix out there! I have Googled but it seems answers are all over the place.

Cheapest and easiest way is like mentioned above buying a turner and turning it off. The only other way involves diving into the motor and changing the lifters which have sky rocketed as of late (way more then what your looking for).

The bog you speak of is the torque converter locking up.

What gear are you in while cruising at 30 - 40? I would bet you are running stock transmission tuning and are in too high of a gear for the speed. I used to have the same thing when I ran stock trans tuning and my truck doesn't have MDS. It would be bogged down in that same range that you mentioned in the op.
