so I am a brand new member and a brand new owner of a 2012 Ram 1500. Truck looks to be set up for towing in that it has a receiver hitch, and all of the necessary plug ins. I want to install a trailer brake controller and am looking for some advice. I see a lot of them on the web that look to be easy enough to install. am I going to have trouble figuring out where it plugs in, or will I be splicing into existing wires. Help please! I read some posts about having something flashed??

^^I second the OEM controller. Piece of cake to install and is very nicely fitted into the dash, out of the way. Look at the install doc The Crow posted, make sure you do have both connectors to plug into the controller under your dash. I put one in my 2010 and it did not need to be flashed to work. 2012 should be the same, uses the same controller. Mine came out of a 2012, (eBay). I "think" that changed in 2013, where you can control the gain through the EVIC - maybe someone else can chime in who knows for sure. I've heard that without a flash, a scan from the dealer show a code for an unknown device, but does not affect the functionality. Mine worked fine for a over a year before I had it flashed when I was in for the pinion recall. All the flash did on mine was add it to my build sheet as a dealer installed option, and it is visible in the EVIC, but not controllable.

been out looking under the dash and I can only find one 4 prong plug. have scoured it pretty good but can seem to find the 2nd one. going to pull some panels off in the morning and get a better view. guess if its not there I will have to take it to the shop and have them figure it out.

it would be next to the connector thats already there. you can still make the factory controller work without it, it just involves some wiring on your part. an aftermarket controller will plug and play however.

I just put the OEM in my 2011 Ram Big Horn and couldn't be happier. All the videos on youtube have been great to help install and there were some good ones showing where and how to splice for the second clip if you can't find it. Mine was taped together with the other one.

I am definitely missing the 2nd 4 pin plug. really would like to use the factory style controller as its a neat application and puts it out of the way. any help on where to find a 2nd plug and how to wire it or where I could find instructions?

I'm pretty sure I saw a thread on this in these forums - but I can't seem to locate it right now - I'll keep digging, it can be done, read thru this thread - it may help, it has connecter part numbers and links to where you can get them

Here's a youtube video that might help - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbWYJIg3B9g

Here is the connector pinouts - Mopar Connection Repair Kit

Hope that helps - let us know how you do
