I had a squeak in my front end of my 2012 ram 1500 quad cab. So I took it apart to see and this is what found. I had to replace both front calipers. What happened??
Just went through this about a month ago with my 2012 as well. Although, instead of a squeak, my passenger side caliper locked up.
Anyway, someone somewhere thought that using phenolic for the caliper pistons was a good idea.
I think it’s supposed to reduce the chances of the piston becoming seized to the caliper bore(mine still seized).
It’s been my experience that phenolic tends to get more brittle as it ages.
My pistons were cracked, in a very similar manner, and ready to separate when I pulled them out.
Hey guys I have a 2012 1500 with 5.7 .....had the front calipers fall into pieces( see pics)....I put two new calipers and pads on it seems to be getting hot now got a little drag sound when I barely get on the brakes. I am tearing it tonight just to look at it. Any ideas?
Looks like the pads were seized in the brackets causing uneven pressure on the piston face combined with the brittle piston creating a crack. Hanse the cracking in the same general area of both pistons
