broken antenna and aftermarket replacement

Good morning,

A week ago I went through one of the automatic car washes in town, only because it was too cold for me to wash by hand, and then my antenna broke off. It broke at the brass fitting where the antenna base screws in. I have priced out how much it would cost to buy the parts for replacement and I'm looking at around $70. I'd like to know if I buy an aftermarket antenna system at say Advance Auto Parts would this be a suitable replacement?

Are you able to unscrew the antenna stem?

Anything will work.

This is an old antenna from my VW days. Its just aluminum and a trimmed screw holding it in place. I say it works better than previous aftermarket antennas.

I tried and after market stubby antenna in the factory housing and I couldn’t get any reception. Had to go back to the factory whip. Going to try soon one of those antenna that mount on the inside of the windshield.

You know, I never really thought about that for my truck. I had an internal antenna on my Expedition (years ago) and never had a problem with reeption. If you opt for internal; what's the plan for the hole where the current mount is? The repair for that will add to the cost and could be something to think about just to get rid of the external antenna. Is the issue that you can't get the old bolt out? If so, you could try drilling it/tap and die/slotted grind to remove it before replacing the whole thing. Just thoughts and my own opinion.

I haven't tried taking anything apart yet because I mostly use iHeart Radio, Pandora, and Amazon music. The brass fitting broke in half and that would mean I'd have to buy the whole kit and caboodle.
