There is actually a more important reason for the cabin air filter; installing it reduces the amount of dust, pollen, and lint etc. from being blown into the air conditioner evaporator core. The evaporator is wet because moisture in the air flowing through it condenses and the dust gets trapped on the condenser in this water film. This trapping continues until the core developes a clay like seal. The air flow through the AC system gradually falls off until it becomes necessary to replace the core. A very expensive fix.

Here is a pic of an evaporator core that has been removed for a replacement!

Sounds to me like the technician didn't want to get involved with modifying your vehicle and therefore the advisor came up with something that would scare you away.

Dealers want to just bolt things on and off. Some dealers will do mods, but even then most will want to do manufacturer specific performance options that are designed for your vehicle. Most won't mess with aftermarket items and in this case slicing into your heater box isn't something they wanted to put their name on.

Picked up for free at the local pick n pull. Got it out of an late model avenger. Time to do some trimming and get a filter.

Cut it out with just a knife. Fits perfect. Still need the filter though.

As stated earlier, only late 2016s and 2017+ models will have it from the factory. Some late 2016s had the hole "cut" and door from the factory, but no filter installed. But 2015 and earlier (and a good portion of 2016s), you have to do the mod yourself.

I was a little hesitant to cut plastic, but I did dive in, and I love the "mod." Keeps my cab much more free of dust if nothing else, don't have to clean it nearly as often now.

I did the mod about a month ago and as far as air flow goes ,no issues. My Cheap old Chevy Tracker even had the cabin AF.. I guess RAM figured they would save a buck by no putting them in lol And for those that have a family member or friend who Farts alot you can get the charcoal Cabin AF to help freshen the air lol

It was the first mod I did to my truck and boy did it make a difference with dust/particles in the truck. Highly recommend but do remember to replace it every once in a while!

Yeah, my '16 had the door and all...except the filter. All I had to do was slip the filter in there. I'm suspecting that the dealer is hoping that an AC core replacement is in you're future, after the warrantee has expired of course. Seems to me that dirt and all that would get in there without the filter would do more "damage" then any slight airflow reduction a filter might cause.

This was the first "mod" done to my truck, with not a single apparent issue. I'd be curious as to why there would be a "problem" with a cabin filter in the Ram trucks, verses the other chrysler products that come with a filter (as the Ram "mod" uses the same filter as a Dodge Journey). I seem to recall reading somewhere the 2017 Rams will now come with a cabin filter installed as standard equipment.

2017s definitely have them!
