I’m not sure I’d advise doing this. Many gas stations even have warnings specifically saying not to do this. As you said, it defeats the auto shut-off and can allow gas to continue flowing when the tank is full. For people who are attentive enough and stand right next to the nozzle it’s less of an issue. But I’ve seen plenty of people who are off cleaning their windshield or grabbing trash from inside their vehicle while filling. It’s not just an environmental issue, it’s also a safety issue.Turning a gas pump nozzle upside down (holding the handle up) is a common, though unofficial, trick to prevent the pump from constantly clicking off early due to premature vapor lock or fuel splashing back. This method reorients the nozzle's internal sensor, allowing for consistent fuel flow, particularly in vehicles with sharp, restrictive filler necks.
This will overflow the tank and it will keep running if you don't watch it to click it off. Beware, use at your own risk.
I’ll jump down off my soap box now
