I may have a couple of different issues going on here, but I'm not totally sure. First off - 2014 1500 5.7, 168k miles. Intermittent check engine light for small evap leak.
I've had some different types of hesitation during startup and I'm not sure if they are related - probably not. First of all, I almost feel like my starter is not engaging when I crank the engine to start. It sounds like the truck wants to start, but it doesn't crank over. It did this to me twice, back to back attempts, yesterday. During the second attempt, it finally caught on and fired up, although slowly (rough idle) for the first 2 seconds, then it was fine. The way it sounded - a higher pitched cranking noise than normal engine turnover - made me think it was the starter spinning. It has done this 2-3 times before, but random and fairly spaced out over the last 7-8 months.
Also, as it happened during the second crank yesterday, on occasion during fuel fill-ups, the truck will hesitate when I restart it after re-fueling. It will turn over just fine, but it acts like it is not getting fuel. Once it fires, it is really slow and rough to idle for 2-3 seconds, then it smoothes out and runs just fine. I don't know if this would be a fuel issue, coil packs, new plugs needed, or purge valves of some sort, or what that would be. It only happens after filling up with gas. A few years ago, I changed out the charcoal canister on the fuel tank due to an evap code and put a new OEM fuel pump in due to the fuel sending unit wearing out (fuel gauge).
