Hi,
Reaching out to see if anyone has a fix for filling your gas tank and having the pump nozzle click off every 4 seconds?
I have a 2015 Ram 1500 Bighorn with a 26 gallon tank, and it can literally take up to 30 minutes to fill my tank. In warmer weather, I was able get past the pump handle shutting off by playing around with the pump nozzle placement, but now that the weather is turning cooler, it has become worse.
Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I had this exact problem about a year ago. It was the rollover valve on the gas tank sticking closed. The dealer replaced the tank and filler tube which solved it. There is a TSB on this. When the rollover valve sticks fuel backs up into the filler tube triggering the gas pump nozzle to shut off and close as if the tank was full after a fill up. My extended warranty covered the cost of this with only a $100 deductible.

I know after I bought my 2014 there were issues with some owners to fill tank because of pump shutting off. I never had the issue with mine but from what I understand it was the spout not fitting correctly into filler pipe causing it.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, my warranty has long since past.

A charcoal canister with fuel in it can also cause this. That usually results from repeadlly topping off the tank after the pump clicks off when full. A sticking rollover valve and a charcoal canister with fuel in it both cause the slow filling.

I had this problem with my 2019 ram 1500 Laramie. I had to have the entire tank replaced. The mechanic told my that this is a common problem.
I've since upgraded to a 2024 Ram 2500 Limited.

I needed to get gas, so I went to the gas station to fill up. When I took the gas cap off, it let out a big jag of air pressure. I didn't think much about it until I tried filling the tank and the gas pump kept kicking off. Fuel would back up in the filler neck and then just slowly trickle down into the tank. My first thought was that my truck had a bad prostate. But then I remembered the pressure in the tank when I took the cap off. I looked at the filler neck and smaller vent hose that attaches to it and couldn't see anything out of the ordinary (kinked or damaged). Finally out of desperation to get my tank filled, I decided to crawl under the truck and pull off the large vent hose down on the charcoal canister, then it filled normally.

I finally had a chance to look at it again today, so I took the large vent hose off again that goes from the ESIM to the vent filter and tried blowing through it. It was almost completely plugged, barely passing any air.

Next I removed the filter to check that but it was clear.

Besides a rubber and plastic tube that exits the filter, the last part is a vent cap at the end, up by the transmission bell housing.

It turns out the vent cap was full of mud, not from mudding off road, but from a Mud Dauber building a cocoon in the cap.

Anyhow, I cleaned and blew everything out and now my gas tank fills normally again... At least until the next mud dauber finds my evap vent hose.

I hope this helps!

I have the same problem..clicking off that is...I tried turning the nozzle upside down and using low fill speed...that seems to work...for what it's worth...2018 Ram Black....

I know of more than one truck from the early 2000's, where that vent line's tie wraps rotted or broke. The line then sagged onto the exhaust and melted itself all or partially closed.

That of course caused the same slow to fill symptom.

Had a similar problem for a different reason. 2016 Expedition with the 33-35gal fuel tank had its fuel pump replaced. Shortly after getting it back I noticed the fuel attendant (was in Oregon) took longer than usual to fill truck. At the third filling visit heard him yell out. Just so happened the fuel spit back out onto his shoes. Told me the pump wouldn’t lock; kept clicking off. He was trying to make it continue to flow, and got splashed.

Returned to shop to explain the slow fuel fills. They explained that the fill hose was short, and made it hard to access anything with the tank lowered. Solution: install slightly longer hose. Well, was a good idea in theory, but it kinked when the tank was raised into mounting position.

Same experience with 2019 Laramie. Replacing filler tube did not work, dealer replaced gas tank . DO NOT TOP OFF! Service manager said that is 99% of cause he sees

I have had this on my 2018. There were two notices, which were about the angle of the filler valve and the gas tank having an issue with the roll over valve sticking.I replaced the filler valve and hoped to find a less costly fix, rather than replacing the tank, alas no dice.
I’m now trying to see if ai can get the larger tank, but in a 2024-2026 tank model (the tank problem went through 2019).

There have been many threads on this. From 2015 to 2018 they had filler necks that were too steep. Ram was trying to deny this for a long time, but they finally admitted it in some cases, and they replaced mine with a new part. Not only was it hard to fill the tank, with it clicking off constantly, but the nozzle would get stuck in the truck. If you're past warranty you can buy the updated part, and from what I understand it's not too hard to replace.

People have been talking about issues with 4th and 5th gens in this thread. Since the OP has a 4th gen I’ve moved this thread to the 4th gen section.

The causes for this issue seem to vary quite a bit depending on which generation is being discussed. The fuel tanks were changed for 5th gens so I would feel safe in making the assumption that what works to fix a 5th gen probably won’t work for a 4th gen. And vice-versa. (Mud dauber cause being the exception)

Turning a gas pump nozzle upside down (holding the handle up) is a common, though unofficial, trick to prevent the pump from constantly clicking off early due to premature vapor lock or fuel splashing back. This method reorients the nozzle's internal sensor, allowing for consistent fuel flow, particularly in vehicles with sharp, restrictive filler necks.

This will overflow the tank and it will keep running if you don't watch it to click it off. Beware, use at your own risk.

I had that on a Ram, fixed it, changed all the parts you showed in the picture, tank was not purging the vapors, so the pump nozzle thinks you're full and shuts off.
