Can the default map size be changed?

I can't seem to figure how to keep the map from wanting to zoom in. Whenever I zoom out for a broad view, the thing zooms back in after about 10 seconds or so. Anyone know how to set a default size?

I went to settings and turned off "auto zoom". Not convinced that is the solution, but it will do for now!
