i have a 2012 4.7l v8, i am wanting to change my plugs and have bought 8 wires and 8 plugs. I'm reading that some models need 16 total, would this be true for my RAM? just to be clear, its not a hemi. any sort of advice would be much appreciated as i don't want to rip out the plugs prior to having all of what i need to replace them.

your 4.7 is not a hemi you only need 8 plugs and wires but im thinking you have a 5.7 hemi if that is the case you need 16 plugs

Just go under the hood and count to see how many you have before you disassemble anything. I don't know much about them but I feel like I read where some on here that some 4.7s were dual plug

How did you select the plugs and wires if you don't know what your engine requires?

Hopefully he didn't buy the plugs off Amazon or Ebay either, otherwise he might have a chance at getting good at swapping the cheap knock-off plugs from both Amazon and Ebay, lol

Well, I learned something today - my 6.4 takes 16 plugs. I had never heard of that before. On the plus side, as I only put <8000 miles per year on her it will only require 1 plug change during its life, and that will be more than a decade down the line.

All Generation 3 Hemi's take 16 plugs. This generation of Hemi from 03 till now is called the 3rd Gen Hemi, the first Gens were the old hemis from the 50's , the 2nd Gen is the 426 from the mid 60's to the early 70's , now we have the 3rd Gen of the Hemi. Pick up one of these plug sockets,it makes changing the plugs on a hemi a bit nicer, and thank the lord you're not doing a plug swap on a Hellcat Hemi, they make the trucks look easy in comparision, lol.

Thankfully, I pretty much quit working on my own vehicles just a few years ago. Now I let the guys who get paid do the PITA work that always busted my knuckles and made me swear. Being a pious man, I've always tried not to use language like that in front of myself. :emotions36:

Find a 6 year old kid,and start buttering him up to help you change plugs in 10 years. That way you can wear the white hard hat and direct him while drinking beer, :waytogo: :Big Laugh::Big Laugh:

Same year and engine as mine. Yep, 16 spark plugs, need a skinny socket for the lower bank.

The road to hell was paved with good intentions. I think a little more research is required before you get into something you wish you never should have. How many out there see cross threaded spark plugs and damaged cly head threads. A show of hands please. I'll never fault someone for wanting to try however, sometimes it's best to leave the job to a professional or at least someone with a little more experience.

I had an '03 Dakota with the 4.7 V8 and it only took eight spark plugs. Either the following or year after they went to two-plug-per-cylinder head. As I recall one row, top or bottom, had a 30,000 mile maintenance replacement and the other was 60,000.

Your 2012 4.7L has 16 spark plugs - 8 upper and 8 lower. When they upgraded the 4.7 in 2009, they added 8 plugs with the knowledge that they gained from our HEMIs. I had a 2012 4.7 before my 2013 Sport. I LOVED that 4.7. It did whatever I asked of it!

I believe the HEMIs are the only ones w/16 plugs. I have 09 1500 quad cab and my 5.7 had 16. Took out Platinum plugs 61K miles/warranty recommendation. Put Double Platinums back in, supposed to be good for 100K miles. The ones I took out were all still in good shape and only worn down about a 1/3rd. Not having done it before, did take me 4-1/2hrs on one side of engine, next day on other side only took 2hrs. Had to remove injectors is what takes the time, when you're not sure about what to do.

If the old copper 30,000 mile plugs would easily go 60,000 miles, I'm guessing the newer 100,000 plugs will easily go 150,000 miles.....
