With the used truck market on fire right now, I’m contemplating selling my truck. I’ve done a ton of work to it, but I’m ready for something different. Problem is I know that used trucks are going for good money right now so I’d make out decently, but then I’d be “over paying” for the next one. Opinions? Thoughts? It’s a 2016 ecodiesel with just under 69k on it.

First of all, that truck is beautiful. You’d be crazy to dump it. Especially if it’s been good to you.

Secondly, like you said, you would probably make out well selling it, BUT, when you overpay for your next vehicle, you will lose all of your profit.

My advice, keep it.

Oh. And also I forgot to add. By the looks of that truck, you have invested ALOT of money in mods. Don’t get me wrong, it’s beautiful and well done, but a lot of money nonetheless.

Most of the time you don’t see that money back when you sell/trade, so, all that is just lost.

IMO, keep it. You know that truck. You know what you have.

Just figure out how much its worth to you first, and then bring it to a place like Carmax and see what they appraise it at to see if its remotely in the realm of your expectations. You of course will get more private party, but if they are offering way way way below what you expect, then chances are its not going to be a good deal for you. The market may already be softening too, like lumber prices went from $1500 back down to $400s, so a lot of the craziness may be calming down.

Also while some vehicles are fetching much higher than normal price, not all are so if you're interested in a used sedan for example those might still go relatively cheap as all the hype seems to be on the trucks, SUVs, crossovers, and some of the new EVs.

This is ultimately a decision you, and you alone, must make.

I just sold my '15 2500 4x4 regular cab/longbed, which had some nice mods on it, too. Got $27,500 for it, about $3K less than I paid for it "new" (untitled Dealer unit with about 700 miles on it); tickled pink given it was a six-year-old truck with 63K on it.

I didn't need a ¾-ton truck any more, having retired and moved to a ranch one-level house on 1 acre from our former farm - don't haul hay or beef any more!

I have a '21 RAM Classic 1500 4x4 Quad Cab on order, which will ride smoother and get better gas mileage, plus the grandkids can ride in the back seats. Ordered from Aaron at Mark Dodge and got 10% off sticker, so I feel I did great on both ends given how the market is right now.

Eric, ol buddy, you don't need another truck, you need another project. Wow, that thing ever tweakered out. You get another vehicle, and the process is going to start all over again. BTW, all those thousands of $$$$ you spent on mods, are pretty much thrown away if you trade it to a dealer.

Unless your house is paid for, you're debt free, you have a seven figure 401K, and are going to pay cash for the new project vehicle, no, you don't get a new vehicle.

But Yes, I would sell that truck if I was you. I'd use the money to get out of debt, and buy an old Toyota Carolla. After you're completely out of debt, you save up the cash to buy a new truck. Trust me, you spend Your own money, not the banks, and things mean a whole lot more to you.

That's just my opinion. You do what ever you want.
