Hey gang,
New here. We (the CEO myself) just purchased a new-to-us 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 with the Ecodiesel with 34,990 miles on it and I'm just in need of a little help with some specs on DEF capacity. Here's a brief history/scenario. When we purchased the truck a couple of days ago, it had about 1/4 tank of fuel and what appeared to be about 1/4 tank of DEF. Being brand new to this Ram thing, the DEF thing and the Ecodiesel model, I wanted to start with a fresh slate in terms of mileage, DEF longevity and the correlation between the two.

The small dealership we purchased the truck from, did not provide us with an owners manual so, I had to dig around slightly on the net to find one and did. But before I dug up an online owners manual, I did the old "Google search" and an answer popped up that stated our truck's DEF tank was/is 8 gallons. I then found the manual on line and looked up in the specs what the DEF capacity is/was. Well, needless to say, it's a bit different than the Google answer I got. The manual states that our model, the 1500 Laramie, holds 5.7 gallons of DEF.

Sooooo, 8 or 5.7? Well, off to Walmart we went to pick up some DEF. Walmart has three prices. $8.88, $15.00 and $20. All for the same amount, but supposedly different blends or "triple filtered" bla bla bla. We picked up a 2.5 gallon jug of the $8.88 stuff and headed home. I installed it as soon as I could. Then, I went in and turned the key on and that made the gauges come to life. The DEF gauge swung to just under 3/4 of a tank. Hmmmm. This is where the figure 8 seems more logical. Based on the fact that tank was sitting at the 1/4 mark (but not actually in the red zone) before I started, then adding 2.5 gallons, I ended up at just less or right at 3/4.

Soooo, I figured let's just see. We buzzed back to Wally world and picked up another jug. Only this time, I splurged and got the $15.00 stuff. I don't know why, I just did. We got back home and I immediately began to add the second jug. I was very careful and was listening to the gurgling as I poured that second jug in. At about 3/4 of that jug into that tank, I stopped filling and checked the level on the DEF gauge. When it stabilized, it was just below the full mark. Hmmmm, ok, lets put the rest in. I then very carefully finished off that second jug and there was no burping out of the fill port. Whew, I was close.

I then again went in and checked the level with the gauge and it was dead full. Soooooo now, based on my Google search, this means that the 1/4 tank that we had when we started, is close to 3 gallons since we added 5 and came up full, for a total of 8, correct?

Or, according to the owners manual, that 1/4 tank we started with is .7 of a gallon because, we added 5 gallons (and that brought the level to dead full) and that would a grand total of 5.7 gallons which, is what the spec is in the owners manual. I myself have a hard time believing that the 1/4 tank is only .7 of a gallon but what do I know, I'm no DEF tank designer. Can I get some thoughts on this? I surely appreciate any help here.

It's a little over 5 gallons for the 5th gen DEF tanks. There isn't a float in the tank that provides the level...it's something different attached to the DEF pump. After awhile (several miles or key cycles), it'll settle at the right level.

Here's a link for the owner's manual.

GTYankee,
I appreciate that link. However, I already had that link and saved the build sheet to my favorites. And, while that list (build sheet) looks to be pretty comprehensive, it states absolutely NOTHING about the DEF tank and or its capacity. It does list however, in the "Options" sections, 3.8 gallons of additional diesel. What the heck does that mean?

Ecodiesels have an 8 gal DEF tank.
The Cummins 6.7s have a 5.7 gal DEF tank
John,
I appreciate your help here. Just wondering, unless the specs in the "online" version of the owners manual are different from paper book edition of the owners manual, it does say in the online edition 5.7 gallons for our model of 1500 Ram. Here are some pics of what's stated

Your chart also shows 8.5 qts oil when it takes 10.5 qts
Or maybe the 2021 models are different.

Well Sir,
Not knowing any different, I googled various years of the Ecodiesel and came up with the fact(s) the 2019 Ecodiesel has a 10.6 quart oil change and in 2020 and above, they went to a 8.5 quart change. That's all I know at this point.

When it comes to DEF its all the same, ya don't need to use that high priced DEF, just buy cheap Wally DEF, been using it for over 3 years now without a problem, when my DEF tank get at or below 1/4 I just buy one jug and dump it in until it gets back down to 1/4....

I thank you for helping out here. Since I'm new to this truck and DEF stuff, I figured I'd just fill up the DEF tank to the top (or as close as possible), then run whatever amount of fuel (as in fill-ups) it takes to watch that DEF level trickle back down to a level that's time for a refill or addition. That process will give me a baseline for knowing the rate at which DEF is consumed and when (and possibly where if on trip) to purchase some and add it.

I have never filled my DEF tank to the top and personally don't care how many miles I get to a gallon of DEF nor do I store a partial jug thus I only buy when tank is at or below 1/4 as seldom that I'm too far from a Walmart, Menard, Tractor supply, Kroger/Fred Meyers when in need of more, also I hate the smell of DEF so don't want a partial jug sitting in the garage for wife to yell at me.... Also do not buy DEF that is sitting out side in the sun at a gas station because heat not a friend of DEF

Bought my 2016 1500 new. The def tank is 8 gallons. Def crystalizes with exposure to air, so I've always kept it full, adding 2.5 gallon jugs from whoever has the best price(Rural King $6.99 here), when it shows about 2/3 full. After 9 years my def pump failed. So I replaced it & pulled the tank to clean/inspect it. There was no build up of crystalized def inside. I flushed it, the injector & the supply line with distilled water connected the new pump & all is well.

@FIRE UP - The manual you downloaded is correct. the Gen3 (2020-2023) Ecodiesel models have different capacities than the Gen1/Gen2. I believe there were some misprints in the original run of 2020 manuals, but they were corrected in 2021+ manuals.

Also, the oil filters and fuel filters are different on the 2020-2023 MY trucks. The Mopar branded oil filters are insanely priced, and as many of us are discovering, the Wix/EcoGard/STP filters are MUCH cheaper and work just fine.

Hope you enjoy the EcoD. I love mine. (2023). 27-29 MPG around town and 33+ on the freeway. Not bad for a 1500 crew cab!

Fire Up - congratulations on buying the Ecodiesel. I love mine.
I have a 2020 1500 ecodiesel, 52k miles. Have towed my travel trailer with it for past couple years and no issues.
The DEF tank on mine is near the 5 gal version. If I put 1 2.5 gal DEF in the tank it’s over 1/2 tank. I put one 2.5 gal in at at time, takes along time to use the DEF up as compared to number of tanks of diesel.
I started out using the Blue DEF, but during COVID changed to the WalMart version. I’ve experienced no issues with the Walmart version; works just fine and saves me $6-$7 dollars per container.

Hey Gang,
I most certainly appreciate the nice comments. Long story short, we'd been looking on and off for a year to a year and a half and would always get discouraged due to price and a phenomenal amount of miles on any newer trucks we were considering. So, we'd drop the idea AGAIN, and just keep our 2011 GMC Sierra 1500 Extended Cab 4x4 with a mere 64K miles on it. Then all of a sudden, this one popped up in a local ad here in our town of lake Havasu AZ and we took a real close look at the ad. Hmmmm, this seems right up our alley.

So, we got it and without a doubt, it's the finest vehicle we've ever owned in terms of luxury, ride, quality build, noise level (or lack there of) OUTSTANDING FUEL MILEAGE at least so far, the paint is absolutely stunning, (Delmonico Red Pearl coat with Silver accenting over the fenders and sides, phenomenally beautiful interior that's NOT BLACK!

Not having any service records, I'm changing ALL the oil and filters including oil, fuel, air and cabin air. We just ordered some automatic powered steps for it that should arrive within a week or so. And, I'm starting to gather all that's needed to make this truck flat towable behind our motorhome.

DO Not cheap out on your rear fuel filter, if you cant find a Mopar filter for a good price then you can always use the Baldwin PF46152, $37.95 plus shipping at Rock Auto..... FYI do not use Doc Diesel filters.

06 Dodge,

"Do not cheapen out on your REAR fuel filter????

Rear? I was under the impression that there's only ONE fuel filter and it's located just behind the left front wheel by the frame. I've already changed it.
