Hey gang,
New here. We (the CEO myself) just purchased a new-to-us 2021 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 with the Ecodiesel with 34,990 miles on it and I'm just in need of a little help with some specs on DEF capacity. Here's a brief history/scenario. When we purchased the truck a couple of days ago, it had about 1/4 tank of fuel and what appeared to be about 1/4 tank of DEF. Being brand new to this Ram thing, the DEF thing and the Ecodiesel model, I wanted to start with a fresh slate in terms of mileage, DEF longevity and the correlation between the two.
The small dealership we purchased the truck from, did not provide us with an owners manual so, I had to dig around slightly on the net to find one and did. But before I dug up an online owners manual, I did the old "Google search" and an answer popped up that stated our truck's DEF tank was/is 8 gallons. I then found the manual on line and looked up in the specs what the DEF capacity is/was. Well, needless to say, it's a bit different than the Google answer I got. The manual states that our model, the 1500 Laramie, holds 5.7 gallons of DEF.
Sooooo, 8 or 5.7? Well, off to Walmart we went to pick up some DEF. Walmart has three prices. $8.88, $15.00 and $20. All for the same amount, but supposedly different blends or "triple filtered" bla bla bla. We picked up a 2.5 gallon jug of the $8.88 stuff and headed home. I installed it as soon as I could. Then, I went in and turned the key on and that made the gauges come to life. The DEF gauge swung to just under 3/4 of a tank. Hmmmm. This is where the figure 8 seems more logical. Based on the fact that tank was sitting at the 1/4 mark (but not actually in the red zone) before I started, then adding 2.5 gallons, I ended up at just less or right at 3/4.
Soooo, I figured let's just see. We buzzed back to Wally world and picked up another jug. Only this time, I splurged and got the $15.00 stuff. I don't know why, I just did. We got back home and I immediately began to add the second jug. I was very careful and was listening to the gurgling as I poured that second jug in. At about 3/4 of that jug into that tank, I stopped filling and checked the level on the DEF gauge. When it stabilized, it was just below the full mark. Hmmmm, ok, lets put the rest in. I then very carefully finished off that second jug and there was no burping out of the fill port. Whew, I was close.
I then again went in and checked the level with the gauge and it was dead full. Soooooo now, based on my Google search, this means that the 1/4 tank that we had when we started, is close to 3 gallons since we added 5 and came up full, for a total of 8, correct?
Or, according to the owners manual, that 1/4 tank we started with is .7 of a gallon because, we added 5 gallons (and that brought the level to dead full) and that would a grand total of 5.7 gallons which, is what the spec is in the owners manual. I myself have a hard time believing that the 1/4 tank is only .7 of a gallon but what do I know, I'm no DEF tank designer. Can I get some thoughts on this? I surely appreciate any help here.
