This is the first diesel car/truck that I have ever owned. It is a 2021 Ram 1500 ecoD with 65k miles. Currently, the def guage is showing just above 1/4 tank. At what point am I supposed to fill it? When it hits the red? 1/4 tank? 1/2? Are there any other quirks or things I should be aware of or watch out for?

I got some archoil and was told to change the fuel filter to get a baseline.

TIA!

Welcome to the diesel club. I’ve owned a few EcoD’s (Ram and Gladiator) and while they are good engines, the environmental equipment is the weak link.

DEF leaves a film on the sides of the tank and likes to crystallize when it dries. The level sensor in these tanks is an optical sensor runs the full depth of the tank instead of the traditional float style. Keeping the sensor wet will help to avoid unnecessary issues and annoyances with the system.

Keep the tank at least half full but don’t top it off as it can ruin the level sensor. I used to fill up at a half tank and call it full around 7/8 tank.

At 1/4 of a tank, you can dump a 2.5 gal. box of DEF in it. It should read about 3/4 full then.
