DIY Ram Emblem Painting 3rd gen

So we're in the process of painting my Ram emblem Pink

Managed to separate the chrome Ram from it's black background, sanded it very tediously and have laid two coats of primer (lightly sanding between each coats) overall it's been a 5-6 day process so far. Getting ready to lay the paint.

Has anyone done this before? Any pointers?

Is that from the tailgate or grille?

If I had caught you when you started, the answer would have been 'soak it in bleach'
it breaks down the chrome within minutes, leaving nice clean plastic to be painted.

However, I think you're headed down the right path with what you're doing.

EDIT: I guess only certain plastic coated chrome comes off with bleach. I tried this on my own emblem to no avail.
At least I know it was bacteria free when I sanded it.

Alright, so paint then clear coat. everything was great until I laid clear coat.

Here's a pic.

Only thing I know to do is sand it down and try a different clear coat brand?

The paint was given about 20 hours to dry.

Care to share how you separated the emblem from the setting? AND the badge itself from the grille? I've wanted to paint mine, but I didn't even know you could separate 'em.

As for the paint problem, is it the clear itself that's cracked? If it is, I'd probably give a different brand a shot. For the record, I've never really cared for Duplicolor products. I've always like Rustoleum more.

We pulled mine off of a grille that was broken. It's held on by the same adhesive-type tape that they use for badges. The guy at the body shop heated it (very carefully) and worked around the outside edges with a pocket knife. there's 3 prongs holding the chrome ram to the black background, it's just a matter of patiently working them off without breaking them.


As for the clearcoat, we took the emblem up to the body shop and he told us that any store-bought clear coat has so much thinner in it, that it'll cause the paint underneath to bubble up like that. So he said to start over, lay 4 coats of primer and 3 coats of paint, then he'd clear coat it for me with something much higher quality.

Any of the clear I have ever used says to either coat within an hour, or wait 7-10 days for the paint to cure before clearing. You were right in the middle of that. I had similar results. Sorry you had the issue!
