Does fan activation automatically open the AGS?

In other words, if the PCM tells the cooling fan to come on, does that AUTOMATICALLY open the Active Grille Shutters?

Or is there a separate control for the AGS and a separate control for the fan?

I ask because I now have HPTuners up and running, and I adjusted fan limits (20* lower), so the fan comes on earlier, along with a 180* stat. But HPTuners has no method of controlling AGS, so I'm kinda hoping the AGS is PCM-commanded to open whenever the PWM fan comes on. I know there are other parameters that will open/close the AGS, but my only concern here is the fan.

I do actually like the concept of the AGS and I'd much prefer to leave them fully intact and operating. They obviously provide faster warmup.

Thanks

I don't think that'll open the shutters any earlier, but it'd be easy enough to check, drive it till it's at full operating temp, leave it running, then check to see if they open when the fan cycles on.I've never actually checked that operation,as i ran with most of the shutters pulled so it wasn't really something i looked into.
What grill do you have, there's a big differance in how much the differant grills allow as far as airflow goes.
My truck originally had the sport grill, and when i swapped to the honeycomb inserts, there was a differance in transmission and engine temps with the free'r flowing honeycomb inserts.

Yeah, thanks. My plan today was to check by the method you described, as it's really the only method I could think of, haha. ;)

I did a short drive yesterday, with new fan settings, and the fan came on right at the new lower setting (198*). ECT (engine coolant temp) trended down quickly. But I didn't think to check the operation of the AGS.

So today, I will drive slow until it starts to get hot, then pull into parking lot and put up the hood to watch operation of fan and AGS, along with carefully monitoring the ECT, to see when all the action starts (or not).

I will report back with results..................

Maybe a stooopid question...

Why don't the Warlock's have the AGS system?

My 19' Express with the honeycomb grill had it but my 23' Warlock doesn't.

So I did the test today:

The PWM fan setting in HPTuners has two entries, each based on outside ambient temps. The applicable fan setting for my test today was 201*.

I pulled into a parking lot with ECT at 190*, and then let engine idle, popped hood, and kept going back and forth, looking at ECT on dash gauge, then looking at fan, then looking at AGS. At this point, fan was off, and AGS were closed.

1) ECT got up to 195* and the AGS opened up. I witnessed them opening.

2) ECT kept creeping up, reaching 205*, at that point, the fan came on.

3) Within a minute after the fan came on, the ECT trended down.

So, in summary, if I had to guess, I would say that the AGS activates based off of fan setting (and/or other parameters too). This is perfect IMO, as it allows me to keep the AGS fully intact and operating as intended. And now, my ECT should basically not exceed 205*. If ECT creeps up in Summer, I'll just reduce the numbers in HPTuners fan setting.

EDIT: just wanted to remind anyone reading this, I am using a 180* stat.

Thank-you for testing that,i wonder if the 4th Gens are the same

That's one thing i never did check, was whether lowering the fans parameters also lowered the AGS's opening temps.

Yeah, this is great to know. I was actually going to contact HPTuners and ask if they could include AGS control in their software, but now it's not necessary. Simply adjust the fan setting and AGS adjusts to that.

I lowered my fan temp 5*, so now my max ECT should be ~200. AGS should open ~190. It's terrific to have so much easy control over these settings now. ;)

My 19' Express with the honeycomb grill had it but my 23' Warlock doesn't.

I'm also curious why this feature is not installed in my Warlock.

I noticed the AGS cycle count when reviewing items in the Engine Controller section of AlfaOBD.

I wonder if adding the AGS would be sensible due to the range of temperatures we experience from summer to winter.

@Hemi395 and @Brandon-w were looking into adding the AGS system to Cory's 13,i don't know if Cory ever got right into it yet though.
