So first thread ever here. Got a 2014 Lone Star and absolutely hate the chrome so I've slowly been eliminating it. Started with the grill, got an unpainted grill and painted it black and swapped the chrome inserts out for the honeycomb inserts off of the sports. And had to figure out what to do with the bumpers. I've seen a lot of guys on here wrap their bumpers but I wanted something a bit more durable and longer lasting decided to give powdercoating my bumpers a shot. I'd say the results speak for themselves what do y'all think? Here's some before and after pics.

Very nice! I'm with you, I don't care for chrome much. But with my yellow, going straight black like yours doesn't work for me. Need some paint matching done.

Are you thinking of doing the headlights as well?

I am in the same boat as you guys, my Delmonico Red doesn’t exist in any powder coat color. However I did read somewhere you can possibly paint over powder coating. The cost of the powder coating and then paint was a bit much.

I do plan on doing my headlights but I'm seriously going back and forth between doing a retrofit with square projectors and rigid srm's for high beams or doing the tyc oem projectors. Every time I think I've made up my mind I see something I like for the other one. Lol

I thought about painting my chrome but the issue I was having was getting the paint to stick. Everywhere I talked to and looked up says that it just doesn't adhere to chrome very well and I really didn't want it to start chipping off when a rock hits it. Perhaps t heres a powdwrcoat you guys could do that gets really close to your colors enough that it won't be noticeable?

I'm actually going the other way, and trying to highlight the stock chrome that came with my truck. Bring back the 90's :)! Lot's of "murdered out" or "blacked out" rides on the road right now, just trying to stick with what I liked from back in the day. :favorites13:

Everyone has a preference. Not that I don't like chrome, but for me with the yellow, the black looks better.

I spoke to a few body shops and they all said the paint would stick however the prep work involved was the most time consuming hence the most expensive part. Since my truck is Delmonico Red Pearlcoat it involves a coats of primer, coats of Delmonico Red, coats of the Pearlcoat and then coats of clear. The multiple different coats and multiple of each coat is what makes it expensive. If someone has a somewhat more basic color I was quoted $1500 for 2 bumpers, mirrors, grille, and a few other pieces.

Very nice I like it. Is powder coating the same thing as painting?

Powder coating is a thermal set polymer. It is sprayed on, then baked on in an oven. It is usually tougher than paint.

Did the powdercoat shop have to de-chrome the bumpers? Or, did they just spray the powder over the top of the bumpers?

I had my bumpers LineX'd black (on my black truck). But they also do a color match LineX. Durable and looks tough IMHO. I get compliments all the time.

Pretty sure they sanded prepped and powdercoated. But I don't believe they de-chromed the bumpers. It's been holding up for a couple of months now though.

Gotcha. Is it “similar” to Line-X?

Normally they sandblast then bake then powder then bake.
atleast what I was told, they bake before powder coat to bake all the oils off.

LineX is more like rubber and the compound is heated before it is sprayed on.

Ok. Thanks for the info on it! [emoji106]
